8.3 Randomly Hangs

First time trying to get Astaro up and running on an old PC I have sitting around the house. 

I have a gigabyte 865G mobo
3.2ghz Intel P4

2gigs of memory

and 3 Asus NICS....


Does anyone see any compatibility problems with the above scenario.

Basically what is happening is about after 20-30minutes of use, I lose connectivity to the internet but the firewall appliance itself is still up and running so it appears.

Any thoughts?

    I'd look at the NICs first.  Since ASUS doesn't actually make the network chips on their NICs, what do those NICs show up as in ASG?  Realtek/Broadcom/Intel???

    If you have some Intel NICs to swap into the box, I'd go that route.  Also, since you're working with an older board, download one of the linux live CD's and boot that to run Memtest for a couple of hours as you could have a hardware issue with your RAM or something else flaky causing it to lock up.

    These work great for home, especially if all you need are two ethernet ports.  I've got VLAN's setup on mine for wireless, but that's about it.  I've got mine stuck out of the way in a closet and have been really happy with it.

    I like the chasis idea but I already have a spare old PC that I can just upgrade the components on......Plus If I was going to pay retail for a server chasis i'd just get me an ASA that i'm comfortable with. this is just a project for the house.....!!!!! No offense..!!!!

    So if anyone has any barebone config that I could reference as far as working components i'd greatly appreciate it.... Just lookin to turn an old built PC into a firewall for my home project... LOL...!!!!!

    just about anything works..depends on the nics really.  go with intel, braodcom, or 3com in that order.  If astaro won't install or run it's most likely a hardware problem.  if the machine is over 5 years old i wouldn't bother.
