AWG1000: Update to ASG8 possible?

Hi,

we're using an Astaro AWG1000 appliance, currently running 7.511.

We have had some severe problems concerning the user authentication to our Active Directory which lead to User/Password prompts suddenly popping up when trying to access the Web using Firefox or Internet Explorer.

Our Astaro reseller promptly told us that the AWG1000 is EOL and will receive no further updates from Astaro. He also told us that problems with user authentication against an Windows Server 2008 R2 Active Directory were common problems with Astaro V7 but would receive no further patches from Astaro.
But we already had said problems before we introduced our first Windows Server 2008 R2 DC into our domain a few weeks ago...they just got more severe afterwards.

Would it be possible to manually install the Astaro 8 software on our AWG1000 unit and separately license Web and Network security?
Or will we have to get new hardware to get the privilege of running the latest and greatest software?

    Yes, the AWG and AMG systems were discontinued some time back.

    Your old AWG license will not work with the Version 8 "new" licensing model at all.  However, you may be able to wipe the old appliance (not remembering the specs on the AMG / AWG boxes now, we --my company is a reseller-- never sold one) and load the software version of ASG on there, but you would have to get an all-new license for it.  Frankly, I would probalby just opt for new hardware, but if the box you have has at least 2GB of RAM in it, that may be an option -- do understand that Astaro will not support that hardware any more, though.

    Your reseller may also be able to get you some credit for you old license, and migrate you to an ASG Appliance, or Software License, at reduced cost -- these incidents are handled on a case-by-case basis, at least in my experience when we've done some upgrades for some customers in the past (from ASG 220 to 320, or from 320 to an Unlimited Software license, etc.).

    Thank you for your helpful reply.

    I guess it would be wiser to get a new supported hardware appliance than trying to install the new version on unsupported hardware.

    Our reseller already quoted us a new ASG with a trade-in model for our old licenses...so we'll probably go down that route.
