Is There Any Reason To Have More Than Minimum Required Storage?

Hi,

I'm about to use the ASG for the first time on a PC I'm building just for this purpose, to become my new home router. 

Having never used Astaro before I have a simple question about the storage. The minimum required storage is 20GB; I'm just curious to know if there's any advantage to having more storage than that?

The reason I ask is because I have my sights set on this sweet little SLC SSD to use as my storage. However, it only just exactly meets the required 20GB of capacity, so I'm wondering if that may lead to any issues or significant drawbacks down the road.

Just in case it's relevant, I have a NAS that I run 24/7 with quite a lot of storage, so if it's simply a matter of storing logs or something and ASG allows you to export them to another device on the network, that's no big deal to me.

    20 gigs is the bare minimum and it really depends on how much logging you are going to do locally.  However keep in mind that astaro does not presently support TRIM which is going to negatively affect the SSD performance over time.  v9 due this year does support TRIM though.  Since you have the capability i would utilize the log export functionality to your san/nas...doing that should mean 20 should be sufficient.

    Thanks for the prompt reply. 

    Yeah I did come across how ASG doesn't support TRIM yet but I'm not that worried about it, especially if the next version of ASG is going to support it. I'd much rather have an SLC SSD in my router, even sans TRIM, than a mechanical HDD. Plus it gives me something to specifically look forward to in v9! [:D]

    Keep in mind that Astaro occasionally increases the minimum hardware requirements, so there's no guarantee that v9 will install on a 20gb disk.

    If the storage requirements do go up could I just add another drive and have it dump the logs or whatever else uses the most space to it or would I be SOL?

    So far, Astaro only supports 1 drive.
    You could probably modify fstab and add another drive manually, if you don't have a support contract.

    i've used clonezilla with great success..no fstab needed or anything like that.. just works..[:)]

    I've used Clonezilla quite a bit, you can do both with it, though in this case I assume you'd be cloning the entire drive. 

    I hope I wouldn't have to do that, but I know I could put that 20GB drive to good use still if it did happen. Plus, one of the users reports running ASG 7.x I think on his 15GB for over a year or so now with no issues, so I don't think it'll be a problem as this will just be my own personal router at home so it's not like there's a lot of users behind it or anything. 

    Still, it's too bad Intel doesn't make a 30 or 40GB version of that drive.
