low power hard disk recommendations?

Hi,
I'm looking at putting together a low power PC using an atom itx MB.
From looking at the forums I'm not quite game to start using a SSD.
Does anyone have any recommendations for low power consumption Hard disks?
I'm not even sure where to start looking - it doesn't seem to be something manufacturers usually advertise.
Any capacity will probably be plenty, so size doesnt really matter.
NB 2.5" sata

    Hi and welcome aboard.

    I use an SSD in my portable unit, currently off line due to problems with the USB wireless card. The only problem I have with the SSD is the cost which resulted in me putting a smaller unit in, so storage is always showing red on the graphs. Not really a big issue. While it runs with nearly all the features of the main unit, it only ever gets 3-4 users where as my main unit has 15 or so.

    My main unit uses a momentus 500gb with an inbuilt 4gb ssd. It was relatively cheap when I bought it, just before some very bad weather in Asia.

    Both units are currently based on the AMD e350 chipset and run between 30-40 watts.

    Just looked at a few hard drives and they seem to be about 2-3W during use.
    Dont know why but I had always imagined it was much more, at this level its not really significant. 
    I guess it might be because they are made for laptops.

    What about WesternDigital, they have a Green series... not 2.5" though.

    Hi Barry,
    Those 3.5" drives use very little while idling, but get them excited and the power usage increases significantly even the supposed green drives.
    The disk activity light on my ASG is on quite a lot, so I would expect power usage to increase with a 3.5" disk.

    Then there is the alternate thought that a high performance disk will use less power because it will spend more of its time idle.

    The final thing though is we are not talking about much power usage even over a 24hr period, less than a normal incandescent light maybe even down to some of the brighter long life lamps. 

    Way better than running an old P4 with a 60gb IDE drive?

    SSD's are fine. I have had one in operation for over a year now without any problem. Actually, it has been the best performing & least problematic unit of my lot.

    It is low cost, industrial grade, from a good company.
