Advice for virtualization

I'm not voting for hyper-v as a MS partner.. just not wanting folks to pigeon hole themselves.  I have a friend who runs millions of dollars worth of vmware licenses..and even they fire up hyper-v from time to time depending on clients needs.  

On another tangent..i'm getting ready to install a kvm host in my church for taking over our 3 servers needs.  Because it's Linux based and Astaro supports kvm we can save money on server licenses and I have a host platform that is cost effective and rock solid..[[:)]]  The new vm's?  a zimbra server, Astaro, and our new server 2008 that is going to be transitioned to..[[:)]]

I ran astaro in hyper-v for about 1 year.  (Thnak you ms partner program.)  I'd recommend dedicated nics just for astaro (and you can "turn off" IP4 and IP6 in the physical nic settings).  You do not need to use hyper-v legacy legacy nics.  The standard hyper-v nics work with the later astaro builds. 

While I thought performance was good, it now does not seem so after creating a astaro box.  In hyper-v running 4 cpus (host was 6 core amd 3.2) wth 4GB ram.  Actual box is amd dual core 3.0 with 4 GB ram.  As a user, web browsing is much more responsive with the physical box.

One other problem I noted was that disc usuage was reported incorrectly.  Astaro noted the hdd as being full with 0 space left when it clearly was not.

I am actually sharing the gigabit nic between all three vm's for the internetwork..external and the third network(which is where my voip is) are on separate nics.  How was performance impacted exactly?  I did not use legacy nics..those do have issues..i use the newer nic drivers and everything works just fine.

AMD....i'm not surprised vm's didn't perform well.  AMD is unfortunately in it's own p-4 ditch right now.  Intels are the only cpu's i will use for a vm host of any kind not just hyper-v.

Same here. During last year's testing when preparing for virtualization I tried a Dell-Machine with AMD and performance was really poor comparing to Intel equivalents.

Thanks for info, Scott. I will give it a try when our three ESXi's are completely populated.
