Advice for virtualization

Hello, 
I'd like to make some tests in a virtual environment. Can anyone give me an adivice for the VM? It seems that most of people use esxi (I read that it is a supported platform). Other used (free) solutions?

    esxi free does not include backup abilities although inexpensive ones are available form third parties.  Also you are not allowed to use the esxi free version to sell virtual machines...you can use it to run your own servers though.  As a Microsoft partner hyper-v works for me the best as i have access to server 2008 license where i can simply drop things into my existing environment...the license for the server and 5 cals is only 800 bucks if i was to pay for it..not a bad price.  I would not say esxi free is the best...i think you need to talk with a partner who knows at least two of the top hypervisors and can evaluate which one works best in your situation.

    Well, as a MS partner I would vote for Hyper-V, too. ;-)

    The TO wants to make some tests. If I want to test something, I will use free offers as long as possible. Is there a free testing version of Hyper-V available as well (I just don't know)?

    Spending money does of course not stop when buying the OS licenses for the hosts, a reliable backup solution is necessary as well. I use VEEAM B&R for backing up on VM host level and Backup Exec on guest OS level. How about backups of Hyper-V?
