Advice for virtualization

if you plan to use it productively: ESXi. Reason for this is that this is the platform that Astaro has supported for the longest time and hence the support experience with this platform is also the longest (read: the support engineers know most about ESXi) and will maybe be also able to help with VMware related issues. Also, as this platform is widely used, more people will be able to assist you with problems in case they occur (for example if a bridge doesn't work in VMware from the beginning on.... you have to enable promiscuous mode for this [[;)]] ).

I myself have used ASGs on both KVM/Proxmox and ESXi and perfer ESXi, also because I just like it better in the way it can be configured and handled as a virtualization platform.

Peter is right in his remark regarding E1000 interfaces: the default VMware image that Astaro provides does not have E1000 interfaces configured. So best to install the product from scratch by using the ASG ISO image. No worries, this will detect the virtual platform and install the according drivers (same is true for Hyper-V, KVM and XEN by the way).

As for the license: The software license can also be used on any virtual platform. The virtual license however can only be used on a virtual platform (and ironically the ASG does not recognize all virtualized platforms as being "virtual", so a virtual license for example won't work with KVM - this is merely a configuration problem in the installer, no real technical reason for this). 

The price is currently the same, but the idea was to have a differentiation so that promotions / special offers can be targeted only on virtual users. As far as I know there is however currently no special offer for virtual licenses, so better get a software one.

Also for the native speaker support: Gabriele is a VMWare wizard, so you'll get the best Italian speaking support for this platform as well [[;)]]
