Advice for virtualization

Hello,
I'd like to make some tests in a virtual environment. Can anyone give me an adivice for the VM? It seems that most of people use esxi (I read that it is a supported platform). Other used (free) solutions?

esxi is good if you have real hardware raid. if you don't then esxi is effectively JBOD which places your entire system at risk in the event of a disk failure.
