Advice for virtualization

Hello, 
I'd like to make some tests in a virtual environment. Can anyone give me an adivice for the VM? It seems that most of people use esxi (I read that it is a supported platform). Other used (free) solutions?

    On a personal basis, I would recommend VMware ESX(i) with Astaro Security Gateway. Please make sure to use the E1000 Virtual NICs to minimize compatibility problems.

    Alternatively: Proxmox is an open source hypervisor that utilizes KVM, I have had good success with it with generic hardware. You can find out more information at the Proxmox VE site located at Proxmox VE.
