Advice for virtualization

Hello, 
I'd like to make some tests in a virtual environment. Can anyone give me an adivice for the VM? It seems that most of people use esxi (I read that it is a supported platform). Other used (free) solutions?

    Neither of those scenarios are officially supported...and throughput in terms of disk i/o would suck.  just bout anything is possible with enough work.
