Maximum Ram

As simple as this question may seem, the answer can actually be quite complex depending on the hardware and your licensing.

This question should be directed to your reseller if you are using a paid business license.

It's more or less simple.

From a technical view: Upgrading Memory is - depending on the hardware revision - mostly possible
From a legal view: It's prohibited to open / modify the Appliance. You may loose support or hardware guarantee.

modifying the hardware (as memory upgrades) *may* also lead to other side effects as, that the appliance type may not be recognized correctly after updates / new installation and will refuse the appliance licence. I also understand Astaro Support, that they can not troublehoot additional issues that may happen as unreproduceable crashes or soemthing else that might be caused by defective or wrong 3rd party memory modules or other modified hardware (as SSD disks or Flash cards or whatever...)

For that reason Astaro also offers Software and Virtual Appliances, which are - compared to hardware appliances - licenced by Users / IPs, but officially allows to choose a own base hardware as needed.

I got the Asg 110 Appliance with 1GB Ram. 

Will it be possible to install a 2 GB Ram module?

If you want, you can vote my feature request. I ask for an extension of supported ram to 2gb for lower hardware appliances:

Why can't they just pump in 4GB for low end devices that uses 32-bit processor and 8GB for high end devices that uses 64-bit kernels?

I am glad my Fit2PCi is 2GB out of the box, way more powerful than a Appliance and can support HTTP Content Database in MEM, way more cool than those 110/120 that can't do that.

That is true as well.  Astaro is a business after all.

I'm not sure what to think.

Astaro's a great product and I stand by it (I convinced our local IT vendor to carry Astaro) but perhaps someone needs to look at the specs sheet. Lab results are great but when 'real world' performance (according to several Astaro Partners with kit in the field and skin in the game) sits at around half what the sales literature claims, something needs to be reviewed.

Case in point, IPS throughput is rated(on v7) around 100Mbps(v3 h/w) and VPN at around the same. We tuned IPS for our network and it was running fine till I got a complaint the internet was down. Traced the problem down to a user who was trying to dump 4GB across a 6Mbps VPN. At 10% of rated capacity on both sub-systems, the little brick shouldn't have any issues.

Obviously you can't turn *everything* on and expect the unit to meet it's advertised specs but when you're on the bottom end of the unit's recommended user count, running off a 'Net connection limited to 20% of what the UTM is rated for, you shouldn't run up against the hardware limitations.

All this said, barring any drastic changes over the next two years, I'm still sticking with Astaro when our licenses are up for renewal. Will probably move towards software however as we have shiny new ESXi servers and I've worked out some of the bugs with Astaro in a VM environment.[:)]

You are right, but the CPU of 120 is not the same of a 220...
