Virtualizing Astaro Home Edition with Parallels 6 on a Mac Pro

Hi experts,

I plan to install an Astaro Home Edition to protect my small private network I run at home. Since I already run a virtualized SBS 2011 on a Mac Pro using Parallels, the plan is to add another dual-port GB-NIC to the Mac and simply install Astaro as a virual machine, giving it exclusive rights to the dual-NIC. I understand that the OS needed is SUSE Linux Enterprise Server, which Parallels can run as a client.

I know this is an odd and unsupported setup, but since I really don't want to run another device for the Astaro, and my Mac Pro has lot's of capability left, I thought I would give this a try.

So my question here is: has anyone ever installed AHE on Parallels as a virtual machine and can give me the 'thumbs up'? Alternatively, has anyone tried and could give me some reasons why this wouldn't work?

Any feedback is greatly appreciated.

    There isn't a home edition, just a home license.

    You won't need to install SUSE yourself, Astaro is built upon it though.

    I just did a quick search and no one here has ever post about Astaro on Parallels.  All you need to do is download the ISO (ftp://ftp.astaro.de/ASG/v8/software_appliance/iso/asg-8.201-12.1.iso) and give it a shot.  

    One thing that may cause you a little trouble is virtual NICs due to lack of driver support for your platform in Astaro.  If you're able to give a vm direct access to a hardware NIC, you'll be good on this point.

    thanks a lot for your fast feedback. Regarding the 'home edition', I was referencing from Astaro Security Gateway Editions. But that's not important, you got what I meant ;-) 

    I guess you're right about the virtual NICs - I can't natively bind the NICs to Parallels, as far as I know. So I'll have to use whatever virtual driver Parallels offers me - I haven't found out what that is regarding SUSE. Also, I am absolutely no expert in the Linux department, so I guess if it won't run 'out of the box', my ability to fiddle around with it is quite limited.

    I also did some research here and couldn't find a post regarding my setup - I will however post back my results. Due to delivery problems with my ordered NIC (Sonnet Presto Gigabit Server, 2x 1000Base-T, PCIe x4), this might however take another two weeks or so... 

    What do you think of the planned virtual setup:

    - 2 virtual processors
    - 2 GB RAM
    - 40 GB HDD

    Like I said, there's a virtual SBS 2011, a Mac Pro and a Mac Power Book behind the Astaro, only very limited traffic expected....

    I have run Astaro on Mac Pro using Vmware Fusion and it has worked
    very well. The only thing can't do is get vlan support and that is why I 
    use hardware based now.

    Hi there,

    apparently, the NIC I originally ordered (Sonnet) is on back order. I canceled the order after a week of waiting and opted for a Small Tree PEG2 Gigabit PCI Express Ethernet Card 2-Port instead. It should arrive by the end of the week.

    Also, seems like Parallels offers only two virtual NIC-drivers: RealTek-8029 and Pro/1000 (e1000). Both NICs aren't on the HCL, so I'll have to give it a try if the virtual NICs are recognized during the install routine.

    I will update this post AFTER I have installed and tested the virtual setup.

    The Intel Pro/1000 (e1000) is definitely recognized by Astaro, so I'd go with that one.  It's the one generally used by folks who install Astaro in VMWare.

    I meant to post a reply here a long time ago, but I only just now got around installing ASG. My setup is slightly different from above stated landscape - I installed ASG V8 on the latest Parallels version (7 at this time), and used the standard setup for the NICs provided by Parallels. ASG installation went smooth, and the software seems to be running without a problem. I haven't gotten around testing VPN or VLAN so far, so there might be some drawbacks down the line, but for now the install looks good.

    In case your plan to run ASG on a Mac using Parallels, this is a go!

    The only issue as I said earlier is getting vlan support to work, I was never successful on fusion but would love to hear is it works on parallels.
