Upgrade path v7 to v8

I've built a new ASG (software) to replace my existing one. The existing on is attached to my office network feeding about 50 users. The new one is currently self contained on a private lan. v7 is installed, patched and configured using the backup from the existing one. Now I'm thinking of going to v8 to utilize the 64bit frame work so I can use the 4GB RAM installed in the hardware vs. the 3GB limit of the 32bit v7.

I've only seen upgrades references thru UP2DATE or a new install using the .iso. My questions are based on not having to manually reconfigure v8 w/ my settings from v7 after the upgrade/install:
1. Can I upgrade the v7 on my new server that's self contained w/out putting it into production or on the internet?
2. If I use UP2DATE to go from v7 to v8, will it keep my existing configuration?
3. If I do an install of v8 that wipes my server, can I import my backup config from v7?

    Hi, DReW, and welcome to the User BB!

    You only can do an upgrade-in-place from one version to the next if you have an Astaro appliance.  In all other cases, you must do a fresh install and then import your backup from the prior version.

    Thanx for the reply. Just to clarify, the installed v8 will allow an import of the v7 configuration backup? I question this only because when I did a rebuild of v7.504 from the iso, it wouldn't allow the import of my backup which was from v7.511. It only accepted my backup when I patched the server to the matching OS version (for obvious reasons).

    In general, you can restore to a newer version, but never to an older one.

    Hi folks,

    I also want to build-up a new ASG on new hardware.

    Currently I'm running ASG 7.5.11 on an (old) DELL optiplex with 4 NICs and just 512 MB ran. Although the machine fulfilled my needs for two years now the hw is a little bit much power consuming and 512 MB RAM won't really fit for Ver. 8.x.

    As mentioned in another topic I build up new hardware based on a Jetway board with 2 NICs on board, 3 additional NICs, one WLAN card, 2 GB RAM, etc. I'd like to run V. 8.x on it.

    Two questions:

    First, is there a "best practice" path on moving & upgrading from the old machine (7.5.11) to the now one (8.x)?

    Second, which Ver. 8.x would you recommend? Ver. 8.1.... or 8.2....?

    Here's what worked for me.
    Prepare:
    1. Downloaded the .iso for 8.102 & wrote to CD.
    2. Downloaded the u2d .gpg and .md5 for 8.103 & 8.2.
    3. Created a backup of my config and sent it to my email.
    4. Put new Astaro computer & a PC (w/ the updates and config) on a switch isolated from my active network.

    Install:
    5. During the install of Astaro, I gave it the IP 10.1.99.1, subnet 255.255.0.0 & manually gave my PC IP 10.1.100.39, subnet 255.255.0.0. because my production Astaro's IP is 10.1.1.1.
    6. After the Astaro install completed and the basic setup, I imported my 7.511 config into the 8.102 OS. EVERYTHING imported fine including the license.
    7. Logged out & in of Astaro.
    8. Went to Up2Date/Advanced and manually uploaded updates 8.103 & 8.200
    9. Logged out & in of Astaro again.
    10. The Dashboard showed I had 2 updates to which I let run.
    11. Removed the old Astaro from my production network & put the new one on.

    I did all of this yesterday and we're running great.

    a big THANK YOU for your detailed reply, i.e. How-To! 

    All thinks worked as you described them and my ASG is up and running V.8.200 now on new hardware.

    I'l like to make just one remark. In point 6 I noticed a little difference to your installation manual. In point, my license file wasn't imported from backup. I had to import it manually from a license file. But, this didn't matter.

    And a big compliment to the guys at Astaro! They did there job in simplifying the uddate/upgrade process very well! Both, this and your fine description spared me a lot of time!
