Auto-Up2Date a 512MB 220 from V7.510 to V8?

One of my customers has a 220 running only firewall, IPS and one S2S VPN (they only have a Network Security subscription).

I wanted to prove to myself that a 220 with only 512MB could auto-Up2Date to V8 if everything were disabled, but my test device is having problems.

Has anyone tested to see if this is possible?

Cheers - Bob

  • I haven't even tried... I was under the impression that Astaro disabled such an upgrade due to technical issues with having that little amount of RAM in a V8 installation.

  • Thanks, Bruce.  I couldn't find that anywhere, and I think the memory usage in V8.1 is slightly less than in V7.5, so I suspect that they don't need to buy a new appliance.  I think I recall that you can't install V8 on a device with less than 1GB, so, if the upgrade path is blocked, there's not much hope for them avoiding a new purchase.

  • I agree, William, for a site that uses something more than these folks.  This is, in essence, a device that sits in front of several web servers; it's been doing the same job for years, and the demands won't change.  It's running very comfortably in 512MB under 7.5, and the RAM requirement under V8 should be slightly less - IF it's possible to get there!

  • Bob, I'm pretty sure you can install V8 from ISO or from the ASI on an old 220... I think they just disabled the in-place upgrade option.  I still wouldn't do it personally, even if it's just a packet filter firewall... that's just not enough RAM for things to run smoothly.

The install process of v8 perform a memory check in order to see if you have an unsupported ram size. See here: https://community.sophos.com/products/unified-threat-management/astaroorg/f/52/t/27911  he had 3gb in a 220 and the upgrade failed.

Edit: Reading trollvottel post in the same thread, it seems that this check is performed in both iso and one-touch-upgrade installation processes.
  • I was able to install 8.100 software version on a v1 220 test box.  Earlier 8.x failed to install and I haven't tried a reinstall with a newer version.
