I'm upgrading from v7 to v8 of Astaro Security Linux and decided to take an existing single port 10/100 NIC out and swap in a dual-port Gigabit NIC that I had procured recently. My old setup had 5 NIC's (4 cards, 1 onboard) which all worked fine. I'm currently installing with the "6" setup (including the dual NIC)...I've got a few questions / concerns, in an attempt to get a handle on any possible issues.
I noted that the eth# assignment appears to vary across reboots. I tinkered with some BIOS settings to remove any unnecessary devices (parallel port, etc) but everything still shuffles order.
On a whim, I put the old card back in, and sure enough, the installer found a different order than what I had been using for about 2 years.
I did a local forum search for "irq eth" which came up empty and Googling wasn't much help either.
So:
1) Once I finalize the setup, will the eth order "lock in"? Or will I have fun on which card is assigned to which network segment?
2) I was hoping to restore my config from a backup (it's rather involved, with 2 internet uplinks, etc). I'm guessing it's best to at least set up the NIC names to the eth# assignments and then do the restore?
Any clarifications, pointing to the relevant resource, answers would be appreciated.
