V8 on Poweredge 6400

Hi,

I have an old PE6400 which is currently running ASG v8 on VMWare Server 2.

As VMWare only allows the guest to access 2 of the cpu's, I am finding it is struggling a little.

I am therefore considering installing ASG directly onto the hardware so it can use it to the maximum.

Are there any special ways to install v8 onto a raid array??  The last time I tried this on this server, it seemed to install ok, but on the reboot was complaining about not being able to locate HBA0 or something like that.

At first, I thought it was just the raid controller was not supported, but on checking it is on the HCL!

I was going to try installing this again tomorrow, but thought I'd better try and get some pointers and advice before doing so.

The specs of the server are as follows:

Poweredge 6400
4 x P3 700mhz xeon processors
3GB ram
Onboard Intel pro/100 nic
4 x D-link DFE528-TX nics
Perc2/DC Raid controller
5 x 18GB U360 scsi hdd configured in raid5

I know its and old server and not very powerful by todays standards, but its really good reliable workhorse and has never let me down yet.

    A PIII generation Xeon CPU is not going to give you a good experience with Astaro. 
    The web interface will be sluggish, and IPS and A/V performance will be limited.

    Also, you are wasting a ridiculous amount of electricity to keep that thing online. (We used to have one.)

    I had a lot of trouble once upon a time when I tried to install RHEL3 or 4 on our PE6400, because RedHat didn't include the RAID driver. 

    I believe the driver is named 'megaraid'

    Astaro 8.102 has a couple megaraid kernel modules, so it may work; give it a try I guess.

    If it installs, but fails to boot, then the installer is not installing grub correctly. You could try posting back here, or trying the 8.2 beta, to see if you can get it to work.

    Or get something that doesn't use hundreds of watts. You're probably paying $50-100/month for the electricity for that beast.
