ASG on ESXi networkcard passthrough

Hello all,

I have a supermicro server here and running ESXi 4.1 U1. I want to install this 4 port network card.
ASG install in a VM and this network card used as passthrough to ASG.

Board and CPU is possible to use passthrough.

Is this constellation supported by Astaro? 
I think I dont need VMware Tools. thats right?
Who can help me?

    VMware tools are not required to run Astaro on ESXi. There are certain benefits to having the tools installed so it's a good idea, but not required.

    Or do you know that Astaro VMware Tools are available now?

    The Astaro VMware images come with a version of VMware tools already installed.

    Do you know problems with ASG inside ESXi well-known?

    None that I'm aware of. I actually do most of my testing of Astaro within ESXi as I can mess around with stuff before letting it loose on my production environment.

    To answer your original question about passthrough, it will work just fine with Astaro. Passthrough just basically exposes the hardware directly to the VM. That said typically the only time I've seen passthrough used is where a piece of hardware has to be exposed to the VM which ESXi doesn't understand, various audio/video capture cards come to mind.

    My question to you is, given these are run of the mill cards supported by ESXi, why do you need to expose them directly to the VM? What feature do they offer that isn't already in ESXi?

    My consideration is that ASG-VM is running in a "sandbox".

    When the network card ist set in Configuration/Advantage/VMDirectPath to passthrough ESXi than no other VM have access to the card. 
    Only that VM that the card is embedded as PCI-Device can use the card. 
    I have no performance problems with the network card because I dont need VMwareTools (flexible).
    I dont have to play with vSwitch and VLan.

    The negative point is that I cant shutdown the VM through vSphere. I have to use the webadmin or vSphere-console.
