I work for a small company that just recently split into two buildings a few miles apart. The first location, an office HQ and the second, our manufacturing facility.
What we do is simple. We have a handful of PC's at each location, we needed to be able to get printer and file sharing working between the two locations. We have a simple PC running as a server for our accounting software and needed file sharing so that client computers could be run at each location.
We don't use domain servers, have crazy security, or anything like that. Everything is primitive at best. My original plan was to set up a windows machine as a virtual VPN server (if I could even figure out how) and let the few computers at the factory dial into it over the internet connection.
I talked to some people and they advised trying hardware devices to do this and through some research we landed talking to an Astaro reseller. The reseller recommended a 120 Gateway at our HQ, and a RED device at our mfg facility. So that's what we chose to do.
Since then, nightmares. I've been dealing with tech support for 2 days trying to get things working, and now it sounds like on top of the money spent buying these things I'm supposed to also purchase yearly licenses to actually use them?
The explanations on Astaro's websites didn't really clear up any of my confusion on the issue. Can anyone explain this for me?
