How to get from 7.508 to 8.102

Simple:

If you are running an ASG Appliance, make sure it has 1GB of RAM or more... V8 will not run well on 512MB.  If you are running a software installation on your own hardware, the same requirement goes for that as well.

First, download the proper ISO... for Official Astaro Appliances, go here: Index of /ASG/v8/hardware_appliance/iso

for Software installations on your own hardware, go here:  Index of /ASG/v8/software_appliance/iso

1)  Make sure you are running a "New Model" license -- check with your reseller if you do not have one, they can convert the license from the classic model quite easily.  An easy way to tell if you are running a "new model" license is to have a look under the licensing in Webadmin... if you see "Standard Support" or "Premium Support" listed as options instead of "Gold Maintenance" or "Platinum Maintenance" then you are already on the New Model licensing scheme.

2)  If you need to update the license, go ahead and upload the "new model" license into your 7.508 installation.

3) create an unencrypted backup of your 7.508 configuration (make 2 to be safe, stored in separate places, I'm paranoid like that)

4) attach a USB CDROM (or use the built in CD if you have a server that you are using with the software version)  -- If you are using an ASG Appliance, I recommend one of the rear USB ports.

5) If you are using an ASG appliance, skip to step 6.  If you are using your own hardware, attach a keyboard and monitor (if not attached already).

6) Insert the ISO, and boot the device (appliance or self-built hardware).

7) If you are using an ASG Appliance with an LCD screen, you will eventially see some prompts on the LCD, stating what stage the install is in.  On you own hardware, just follow the prompts and install.

8) Once the installation is done (the CD will eject from the CDROM Drive), power off the system.

9) Detach the USB CDROM Drive (if attached) and plug in a USB Stick formatted in FAT, FAT32, or NTFS, with the unencrypted backup file (.abf) that you created in Step 3 on it.  It should be the only .abf file on the USB Stick.

10) Power on the system; it should automatically import the backup during boot.

11) After the system is powered up completely, remove the USB Stick.

12) Log into Webadmin, and reset the Loginuser and Root passwords (these do not survive the backup and restore process).

That's it!

Note that if you are using your own hardware, that the Ethernet ports may be enumerated in a different order than they showed up in V7; you will have to figure out which port is which.

thank you for the really nice detailed instructions.

But as I wrote my first post just seconds before leaving my desk, I forgot some information and the question is not carfully worded. I try it again.

We have a ASG320 with 2GB Ram and have already a 'ondemand licence' installed. We don't have HA/Cluster or Wireless feature in use. Backups are in safe places (but I'm as paranoid as you and of course will make additional backups before starting the update.. ;-) ).

I would prefer to use the up2date process and the in-place-update way to get to 8.102.

If I start the in-place-update procedure from 7.508 - on what version 8.xx will I come out?

Or if I up2date to 7.509 and then start the in-place-update to 8.xx - on what version 8.xx will I come out in this case.

Or I up2date to 7.509, then manual upload/update to 7.510 and then start the in-place-update to 8.102.

I like the up2date way because that worked without problems for us in the past, so I hope that this will work also smooth with the in-place-update.

If you want to do it in-place, I'd recommend installing 7.510 and using that in-place up2date procedure, which will land you on Version 8.102.  There is an advantage to the in-place upgrade, in that your SMTP quarantine and Mail Manager logs (not sure about the mail manager logs / data) will be carried over to the new version, if you are using the Mail Security features.

I recall some folks having issues with the 7.509/7.508 up2date process.. this was supposed to land you on Version 8.002, I think.

Given that, I'd go with the 7.510, and keep an ISO for 7.5xx or 8.102 handy just in case things go pear-shaped... in my testing here, that process works fine, though.

OK - I will give that the first shot (up2date to 7.509, then manual upload/update to 7.510 and then start the in-place-update to 8.102). 

ISO's for 7.507 and 8.102 are ready and USB Sticks for the backups too - he! ho! lets go! as the RAMONES said...

@hallowach: just wondering how it goes with inplace upgrade?

I had problem doing inplace upgrade. Mins is ASG 220, 7.510, 1 GB memory.
In Up2Date, firstly only showed 8.101 avaiable. I click upgrade to the latest version but nothing happen. So I download the 8.100 and 8.102 and manually upload. Showed all 3 updates. Click upgrade to the latest, didn't upgrade. Still on 7.510.
So i click Start Upgrade, then Asatro logged me off automatically and showed message in the process upgrading. left it overnight, but still on 7.510.
Then i attach a monitor directly to ASG, and I see this particular part:

: Upgrade Preparaion started
: Inspecting current system
Upgrade Partition is /dev/hda2
ASG root disk is /dev/hda
Making found data persistent
Mounting /var/storage/up/ssi-8.102-2.1.iso at /mnt/iso0
ERROR mount /mnt/iso0 failed
: Restoring swap partition

then it seems it reload the current setting on 7.510. Astaro still functioning properly.

Sure I can do the hardway, upgrade via CD Rom. That will be the last option.
Just wondering if I could do upgrade inplace.

Also, in 8.100 Release note, I found this:
"Upgrading ASG V7 installations to V8.100 
ASG V8.100 will run on all currently shipping Astaro Gateway (ASG) appliance model revisions. Older model revisions which are end-of-sale and not currently shipping are not explicitly blocked from installing V8 via ISO image, but be aware that installation on these platforms may yield an unworkable installation which is over worked, sluggish, or underperforming, especially if enabling many new features when the unit was already close to capacity."

Could it be because my ASG is old model revision? How do I check model revision? And what revision is categorized as "older model revision"?
