Cheaper Configuration

Laptop is appealing because it has it's own UPS built in [:)].  But many people have had problems with the drivers to get the second network card to work.

I use a mini-pc barebone and it works great. When you add up the cost though, it isn't super cheap. All the pieces add up.

Cheapest would be to buy an old desktop and add a lan card. But that costs you in electricity/heat.

If you're comparing an older model ASG 110/120 vs rebuilding a desktop PC the desktop PC will win hands down.

The ASG 110/120 family are based around VIA's C-Series of CPU's. They're small, energy efficient, and some older models that had the 800MHz chip, were slooow when running v7 & v8, especially if you turned everything on.

What are you looking at to spend? $350USD (or thereabouts) will get you an Intel Atom based board that draws as little juice as a laptop and runs rings around the older ASG's and even some older desktop PC's.

1 gig of ram is the absolute minimum for asl these days for realistic performance.

This is a good place to shop for an atom setup.  I used a SYS-5015A-EHF for a few months with ASG 8.1 on my home license without issue.

I built a silent home ASG that only uses 22 watts after boot up and can be had for around $200 USD!

I installed ASG v8 without any problems, restored my 7.x config, installed the upgraded license and I couldn't be happier! The performance is great and the CPU utilization is normally below 5%. I am thrilled to see ASG v8 just run so well on it. I highly recommend this setup for home use.

considering you have to have dual ethernet at a minimum to run asg..200 is a bargain.  Unless you pull form ebay or something similar and roll the dice that's about as low as you are going to get.

i found this but it's more expensive.

my point being you'll be lucky to find something cheaper new..used you be able to match it..maybe go lower..but then it's a crapshoot.  I'm not a fan of the Atom...especially with AMD's brazos and other platforms that are coming out that get within a few watss of atom and totally murders atom.  If i build another low powr box that's what i am waiting on.

some AMD solutions it's better than Intel Atom...what'is the name ION2?
