Have not been able to reach internet from behind Astaro

Hello,

I am new to Astaro and using version 8.003, free home use licence.  I am unable to get past the Astaro to the internet.

I have the following setup:

Computer 1  Pirelli broadband modem/router  internet.

Computer 2   Astaro box (an old Dell)  Pirelli  internet.

If I log into the Pirelli from Computer 1, I can successfully ping Computer 2 even though it's behind the Astaro.

As far as the Astaro setup:

Two interfaces eth1 and eth0, both are showing as "up".  Eth1  Pirelli.  Eth0  computer 2.
Bridging is off.
Under DNS, I have specified to use forwarders assigned by ISP.
DHCP is off.
Under Network Security>Packet Filter, I have one rule: Internal(Network)-->Any-->Any.
NAT is on:  Internal(Network)-->External.
HTTP/S Proxy is on with no address blocking.

...but for some reason I cannot get to the internet from behind Astaro.  I have tried disabling/enabling all of the settings above, but still no internet.

Astaro is setup up under 192.168.2.140
I have manually set Computer 2 ip to 192.168.2.142
Computer 2 is running Windows XP Pro

If I turn on the DHCP server through webadmin, and the try to surf, I am presented with an Astaro-generated page with the error message that the "Network is Unreachable".

As someone who is a novice at this type of thing, I'm likely making a simple mistake somewhere, but my troubleshooting has not yet revealed that mistake.

I've searched through the forum, but so far, I've not found a solution.

I'd be grateful for any ideas.

    Did you make sure you entered the correct default gateway of your Astaro box?

    DHCP is off.


    If the above fails perhaps you could try with DHCP on instead?  As long as the Astaro's DHCP IP address range doesn't conflict with your existing broadband router's IP range in any way this should work just fine.  For example, assuming the existing broadband router's range was something like 192.168.2.10 up to 192.168.2.100, having Astaro's DHCP IP adddress at something like 192.168.2.141 up to 192.168.2.254 shouldn't conflict as long as there aren't any devices with conflicting static/dynamic IP addresses on the network.

    You could alternatively create a completely different subnet for the Astaro to avoid any of these potential conflicts.  Your choice.

    Thanks for the speedy reply.

    From within webadmin, I see many instances of "default gateway" within the various settings.  Could you clarify which one I should check.

    As far as default gateway setting within XP Pro (under network connections), I have had it set as blank, and also as 192.168.2.140 but with either setting, I still cannot reach the internet.

    I have tried with the DHCP on, and still no access.

    When you say you have no Internet access, what happens exactly when you try?  Does it time out after a while before an error comes up, or does an error come up very quickly?  Have you tried accessing websites both by DNS hostname (e.g. astaro.com) and by IP address (e.g. 212.58.224.138)?  Try checking under 'Network Services' > 'DNS' > 'Global' and making sure that 'Internal (Network)' is in the list of 'Allowed Networks' (it should be by default, but check anyway).

    Also, when you went to 'Network Services' > 'DHCP' > 'Servers' to setup your DHCP server, how exactly did you set up your DHCP server at the time?  It was both here and in the Windows network settings where I was referring to when I said check the default gateway - you must match up what you enter in Windows with what you define in Astaro.

    Hi, make sure under Network Interfaces, that the EXT interface is UP and has a default gateway set (either manually or via DHCP).

    The gateway should be the internal address of the Pirelli, assuming you don't have the Pirelli bridged.

    Thanks to both of you Jonf and BarryG.  I have answered your questions as below.  Still have no internet connection.

    When you say you have no Internet access, what happens exactly when you try?  Does it time out after a while before an error comes up, or does an error come up very quickly?


    The error usually takes about 1-2 seconds to appear.  In some cases when the Astaro DHCP server is on, the error is instant.

    Have you tried accessing websites both by DNS hostname (e.g. astaro.com) and by IP address (e.g. 212.58.224.138)?


    Yes.  When I type in an IP address, I get a network timeout.

    Try checking under 'Network Services' > 'DNS' > 'Global' and making sure that 'Internal (Network)' is in the list of 'Allowed Networks' (it should be by default, but check anyway).


    I just checked and it is indeed in the allowed networks.

    Also, when you went to 'Network Services' > 'DHCP' > 'Servers' to setup your DHCP server, how exactly did you set up your DHCP server at the time?


    The DHCP server was sort of automatically set up.  I clicked add a server and it was prepopulated.  As of now, the DHCP server is set up as follows:
    Interface:  Internal
    Range Start:  192.168.2.1
    Range End:  192.168.2.254
    DNS Server:  192.168.2.140
    DNS Server 2:  0.0.0.0
    Default Gateway:  10.0.0.138  (Same as the internal address of the Pirelli router)
    Lease Time:  86400
    Clients with static mappings only:  unchecked
    WINS Node Type:  B-Node (no WINS)
    Enable HTP Proxy Auto Configuration:  unchecked

    The External interface is set up as follows:

    Type: Cable Modem (DHCP)
    Hardware:  eth1
    IPv4 Default GW:  checked
    Proxy ARP:  unchecked
    MTU:  1500

    I have also tried the following settings:
    Type:  Ethernet Standard
    Hardware:  eth1
    IPv4 Address:  10.0.0.2  (This is the address of the second port on the Pirelli to which the Astaro is attached)
    Netmask: /24 (255.255.255.0)
    IPv4 Gateway:  10.0.0.138  (Internal address of Pirelli)
    Proxy ARP:  unchecked

    Looking at your above setup I'm guessing you've changed the DNS server and the default gateway after the automatic part of the DHCP server creation.  Because it would otherwise be the same as the Astaro's internal IP address if left up to Astaro to create the DHCP server on installation.  Is this what you meant by "sort of automatically"?

    Perhaps you should try changing the default gateway and DNS server back to the same IP address as the Astaro's internal IP address?  Perhaps that's why your errors when web browsing are coming in a short space of time.  Failing this try enabling DHCP relay under 'Network Services' > 'DHCP' > 'Relay' and define the internal IP address of your broadband router (or failing this whichever IP address has been assigned by the router to the WAN interface of the Astaro box), if you insist on keeping your existing broadband router.  That way all IP address requests (unless a static IP address is defined) should bypass the Astaro and get redirected to the DHCP pool of the broadband router.

    If that won't do it on its own try also forwarding DNS requests to your broadband router under 'Network Services' > 'DNS' > 'Forwarders', and again define either the internal IP address of the broadband router or the WAN IP address assigned to the Astaro box (I haven't had to use this myself so I'm not too sure which one it is).

    If this still doesn't work put down the hammer and take a deep breath, then post back here and we'll see what we can do.

    yes...and that was probably the root of my problems.  As a novice, I didn't set it up during installation and did it afterwards...clearly incorrectly.

    After much frustration, I decided to start anew and reset the box to the default settings and went through the setup wizard, this time setting up DHCP during installation.

    Now, I think the problem is solved as I can now get to the internet.

    Perhaps the rule of thumb for novices with initial connection problems would be to use the wizard to set up as much as possible before attempting it onesself!

    I am very grateful to both of you, Jonf and Barry.  Thanks for your patience and taking the time to help.

    I will post back later in the day after tinkering with a few settings to confirm that the problem is indeed solved.
