Noob Questions

Hi there!

First of all, I have to admit, that I'm some kind of a noob in regards with Firewall - Systems but I'm more than willing to soke into my brain, whatever you may give me!

Okay, now here is what I have:

I've got a server running, with 1 Nic on which are 3 IP's running!

The main IP is i.e. 192.168.0.X
and the other IP's are i.e. 192.168.10.X and 192.168.100.X

So, now we've got the ASG-220 which should protect at least the 192.168.0.X net.

So, now the install-process of the ASG-220 starts and the first thing is that I have to give a Hostname. Which Hostname??? Is that the Hostname of the Network which the ASG shall protect? Or does the ASG itself require a Hostname?

I have some more questions which I will post after these two have been clatified. If that's okay for you folks!

    Hi, astaro needs a hostname. 
    firewall.yourdomain.com, for example.

    Hi,
    to make things a bit easier there is a manual as part of the menu on the ASG. The manual can be downloaded onto your PC.
    I would suggest that you have a read of this manual before asking any more questions.

    This will make your questions easier to pose and we can respond in terms that apply to the manual.

    Yes, you will need to give the Astaro machine a hostname. 
     
    You should go to www.astaro.com/kb and download the quickstart and admin guides. These will give you the information that you'll need to get started. As well, there are many helpful articles on individual components of Astaro in the knowledgebase.
     
    Since you have a 220, the assumption is that you've got subscriptions including a support agreement. Your reseller (the one that sold you the 220 and subscriptions), should be available to assist you with initial setup in a timely fashion.
     
    For any further questions that you may have, please post the Astaro version that you're using.  It makes things much easier, since there are currently two supported lines (7.x and 8.x).

    Taken from the WebAdmin page where a hostname is defined:

    This is the hostname of the system. It should be a fully qualified DNS hostname, including a domain. It should be resolveable in public DNS and point to the external interface of the system. If you are using DynDNS, you should also use the DynDNS hostname here.


    In other words entering a made-up hostname will not guarantee that you can access WebAdmin from outside your network (i.e. the Internet).  I would recommend registering a free dynamic hostname and entering that as the ASG hostname.  At least this would be easier to remember than a set of numbers (i.e. your public IP address), plus ASG supports automatic updating of your hostname if you sign up for a DynDNS hostname.  As RFCat_vk mentioned consult the user guide via the WebAdmin interface ['Support' > 'Manual'], or you can download a copy from the official Astaro website, depending on which version of Astaro you're using.  If you have no need to access WebAdmin in this way then you can ignore this and go for what BarryG said, bearing in mind the hostname you make up will only work inside your network.
