Hardware Question - New box

Enough background, here's the root of my question. This PC has a built in wireless nic can i configure Astaro to use it as my wireless AP?

AFAIK, You can't. There's no wireless drivers available and webadmin has no facility to handle setting up the SSID & related config.

I suspect part of this is due to Linux's own spotty wireless support. Some wifi cards 'just work' and some require a lot of hand holding or workarounds to get them going. I've had the 'pleasure' of setting up cards in both categories and it's not something I'd want to support on the scale of Astaro's offering. Just my $0.02. [:)]

Since this is a minimalist box to get a second NIC it will be necessary to use a USB external Ethernet hookup, has anybody tried this if so did it work?

Can't say as I've never tried. Would be curious to find out though.

As an aside, what's keeping you from purchasing a second nic? I've seen basic 10/100 nics supported by Astaro at places like best buy for $20-30. Even Intel Pro/1000 nics (which work exteremly well w/ Astaro) can be had online for less then $50.

Yes it will. Only caveat I am aware of is that the new box must have the same or greater number on nics (network ports) onboard.

I don't have a slot to put in a onboard NIC, this is a very minimal box, installing a laptop hard drive consumed about half of the open space, so minimal space and no slots, so it's not an option. 

Given the caveats as laid out I believe I will instead us this box as my web server then and move my web server to firewall duties, it has a better processor and same amount of ram plus I can put in another NIC card and save the expense of buying a USB ethernet. and not worry about if my backup will work.

One final question, how can I go about getting another copy of home user firewall without creating another account? (lost my DVD [:$] )

No USB s are supported.  Andrrew's right that no wireless NICs are supported.

The license you currently have will be brought over in the configuration backup.  When your home-use license nears expiration, go back you your MyAstaro account and you'll be able to obtain a renewal - no need to sign up again.

Anyone can download a new install disk for Astaro at anytime.
