V8.002 - License Usage exceeding

Sorry for Hearing that you are disappointed.

As far as I know we did not change anything regarding the license counting.
This means that V7 should just work as V8.

That said, I want to quickly explain which user/devices need to be counted. This matches V7 and V8.

At astaro a user is equal to a single ip adress in your network. If you have three laptops, a printer and a wifi router, this matches 5 IP adresses. It does not matter if the connect to the Internet or not, as in both cases these devices are actively protected by the astaro.

Means it makes sure that nobody can print 100 pages on your printer or try to log in your access point to change the key or use your ISDN box to create telephone costs.

I hope this was understandable.

But please explain me, why I had no license exceeding with V7 and now with V8 I have that problems.

You say nothing has been changed on user counting and I say nothing has been changed in my network here.

I haven't deleted the Vm with V7. I'll switch back to V7 and look what happens.

It takes a week for IPs to disappear from the Astaro counter, so the upgrade will not solve your problem immediately.  As for the printer, configure it to send the status email to your internal email server, then have your server forward the email to your provider - in that way, the printer's IP won't be seen by the Astaro.

I imagine there are similar ways to "hide" IPs from the Astaro and the outside world.  One customer was exceeding license count because their VoIP phones were getting NTP from a public server.  They reconfigured their phones to get NTP from a local server, and the problem was solved.

I just wanted to add this thread was very helpful. I recently had to change my subnet numbering for our 33 ip address subnet. I instantly got notified I was at 66!! I'm betting there is no way to remove the old addresses so I guess I'll just be patient and let the old ip's disappear in a week.

any device on your local network what has no need of outbound internet connectivity just remove there default gateway. this stops those devices from using the astaro box.

you can also give them a fake (made up) default gateway. just bear in mind that those devices can't reach any other network in this configuration...

And don't let them use Astaro for DHCP, DNS, or NTP.

Please be aware that the license agreement is pretty clear, as Gert explained above:

I.E. it is NOT OK to circumvence correct licensing by just avoiding to let some of the network devices talk to  the internet (like mentioned above) or by using other tricks like using a NAT router before the ASG or whatever.
Of course, you can  fool the license counting mechanism with these tricks, yes that´s true, however you are still using ASG in a not correctly licensed way. You should be aware of this.

Well, Ölm, it wasn't until I read your post that I read Gert's post.  I'm about as loyal a reseller asAstaro has, and this is the first I've "heard" this.  Clearly, hiding IPs behind a NAT is cheating, but printers and VoIP phones not using the Astaro?  Fortunately, the customer I described above redeployed their 110 and a 120 now is in place.  The other customer where there might be hidden IPs has a 100-IP license and about 60 counted IPs, so it's probably not a consideration there.

This does bring up a clarity issue though.  When's the last time anyone ever read a software license?  I think maybe I read one in 1986. [;)]

None of the sales and marketing documentation should talk about users instead of IPs!

The sizing document supplied to resellers should clarify in multiple places that, while computer sizing is based on users, licensing is based on total IPs behind the Astaro, regardless of whether it can "see" the IPs to count them.

Virtually all organizations will come up with the money for a larger license if that's known up-front.  Frankly, I would never go to an IT manager and tell him that his organization of 200 people legally had to upgrade their 250-user Astaro Full Guard license just because they installed a VoIP system.  He'd be embarrassed in the eyes of the CEO, the Astaro would be replaced by the next renewal and I immediately would lose any other business I'd been doing with them.

We all want happy customers that we've helped to be successful in the eyes of their peers and higher-ups!

sorry but my printer does not need to have a route to any other network as it's only needed for the network (lan) connected to. so it doesn't have a dns, dhcp (uses fixed ip) or default gateway settings. i don't see this as breaking any law or cheating. full stop.

Two days ago I upgraded from 7.5 to 8.001.
Since installation I got two mailings because license usage is exceeded.
Today I installed 8.002 because I have read that there was a bug at IP counting.
Some minutes ago I got license usage exceeding mail again.
When I opened the IP list I was very astonished which hardware was listed:
IP of WLAN-Router
IP of Bingo-Box (ISDN box for usage with remote CAPI)
Dedicated internet radio box
My Printer which sends one times per week a mail to out provider mailbox

Why has that been changed.

When I have to buy a license for all this machines, in spite of the fact that the most of them need no internet access or no filtering and firewall or only use the internet access one times per week Astaro will be very expensive (until now we have a 10 user license)!!

just thinking of this. what if you have ipv6 enabled and configure your pcs with ipv4 & ipv6 addresses how does astaro count this? will that be 2 ip numbers per pc?
