Performance of Atom/i3/i5 ?

Anyone tested the troughput of thoses cpus?

I am moving to a 50Mbps connection, which my current setup won't support.

Any experiance which such Processor at such speed?

This is a home setup, so few users. But Heavy Bittorrent, VPN  traffic.

One advantage of i5 over i3 is it support a new AES instruction set (for SSL) feature. Called: AES-IN, but i'm not sure if current kernel will support that

@Home I am using an Intel D945GCLF2 / Atom330, Intel GB NIC and 2GB of RAM with ASG 7.5. Avg. CPU usage hangs around 3% Maxxing to 8%, RAM usage hangs around 45% of 2GB so eh 850MB usage. It runs great, even with Bittorrent and VPN's. When using Bittorrent for downloading Linux distro's though, I get tons of Portscan notifications, and yes my DNAT is set up right. Just the nature of the beast. All in all, great rig. @Home I average 6-7 concurrent connections with a max potential of 13 users. It is on a 16/2Mb cable connection with Power Boost that can punch {on average} a temporary 45Mb burst.

@Clients, I built the Core i3 rig. It is running great, 0% CPU average, 9% of 4 GB RAM usage with 15 concurrent users & VPN's using ASG v8.001. Getting this client to approve new hardware is about as much fun as a root canal, so I try my best to "Future proof" them. Again, this is on a 16/2Mb cable connection with Power Boost.

I am about to build an Intel D510MO rig and will report my experiences.

In regards to the AES-NI built into Core i5, I do not know much about this. A lot of processors in the past had similar capabilities i.e. VIA C3 & C7, yet I have not seen them really be supported on Security based Linux distro's. Maybe someone with more experience in these manners can clarify this for us?

Hi, 50mbps would probably be pushing an Atom very hard, for the IPS, and worse if you're doing HTTP Anti-Virus. I don't think I can get over about 30mbps through my single-core Atom n270 with the IPS enabled, but it's been awhile since I tried. A dual-core Atom would help though, as Snort can run multiple threads.
I'd probably go with a low-power i3 or a 45w AMD CPU though, if I were building something today.

I've considred setting up an exception, but decided against it. If I got a notification without having had done any transfers, I would know something is wrong. I'd rather exercise caution over convenience ya know.

I think I misspoke earlier... I was probably getting 30MBps not mbps, when copying files between LAN and DMZ.
So a dual-core Atom is probably fine, but I'm not running a/v so a faster CPU might still be a good idea if you're going to.

I do have 2 questions:

I have a old (2001) WD D740X (40Gb 7200rpm) harddrive, its old, but it works. How heavy is the HD usage with astaro? Would this cause slowdown?

Same question for a old D-Link 10/100 network card, I did order 2 PCI-e Intel NIC 10/100/1000 which are supposed to have some "Efficient packet prioritization" etc. But if you guys think the DLink would do the same on either WAN or LAN side, I might just put the extra Intel PCIe in my workstation.

Again this is for a 50Mbps/2Mbps connection..

Hard Drive performance is non-important unless you are heavily using the caching http proxy.
Otherwise, all it will noticeably affect is boot times.

If the DLink NIC works, it's probably OK for home use, but Intel seem to be among the best.

Hello, not sure if I should start a new thread but, I have an issue Installing Astaro v8.001 on the new box..

Everything gets detected properly, but right after formatting the hard drive, I get the following message:

"The base archive wasn't found on the installation media"

Log show: install/install/install.tar not found.

The problem is I tried to install using both a DVD and a USB stick. Both fail at the same place.

I have then started up vmware, and created a vm installed from the same DVD, and everything worked fine..

Any idea? maybe my 40gb hdd is not that good after all... But it booted fine into XP.

RAM fully tested without problem.

Try setting the Hard Drive controller to Legacy mode. No AHCI.

Ok, I finally got it to install. The problem seem to be installing from both a USB key or a SATA Bluray drive. (Which read DVDs)... Can't tell why ...

The ACHI was already on IDE:Enhanced (Choice were ACHI or IDE:Compatible|Enhenced)

I got it to install by pluggin in a old IDE DVD drive.

I also remplaced the 40gb IDE drive for a 500GB WD SATA drive because the 40gb make a very bad whistle noise. (yea... that's a lot of space... but that's all I had...) 

Hope this help somebody else in the future.

Will post my stuff to the unofficial supported HW soon..

As you found, Astaro doesn't support installation from standard USB keys.

Not sure why the SATA DVD wasn't supported though.
