CPU Utilization Issues on VMWare

I'm using Astaro 8 on a 4CPU VMWare Hipervisor (ESX 3i).
I've been having huge problems with performance of late.
Basic browsing of web sites has slowed to a crawl.

Looking at the logs of cpu utilization on the WebAdmin shows negligible utilization.
Looking at the logs of VMWare I see CPU utilization hopping between zero (aprox) and 75%.
See attachment of Word Doc showing screenshots of both VMWare and Astaro reporting of cpu utilization.

This is a huge disparity and for all practical purposes I'd say something is certainly going on - I can do almost nothing on the web.

This is only a home environment so there's not much going on behind Astaro.

Has anyone else seen this?

    Hi, did you use the VMWare Astaro image or an install from the ISO?

    Hey Doug,

    Could you please expand more on your system i.e. what "4 procs", motherboard, what NICs etc.

    I have not used ESXi 3. I started with ESXi 3.5.

    My first impression is that this is not so much a problem with the CPU as it is with a lack of RAM. I have observed that ESXi requires about 700MB of RAM for itself, which doesn't leave much for Astaro. ESXi HATES! swapping. I would check the memory performance chart of your ESXi box and check for swap usage or memory ballooning. If it is anywhere above 0% ever, I have seen it drop OS guests to their knees. I don't recommend any ESXi install with anything less than 2GB of RAM, which is why I think it is the minimum requirement now. It allow ESXi have it's 700MB and have some left over for the guest VM's.

    Clarification:  This IS ESX 3.5
    I upgraded my machine from 8 GB to 12 GB and things seem to be humming right along.

    Thanks for your observations, they were the key. 
    I'll consider this resolved.
