Could you expand in more detail on the specific hardware please?

Which Intel 1.3GHz?
Which Sempron?
Motherboards?
What drives?

Preliminarily I agree with pireateghost. I would use the Sempron, get some intel Gb NICs and probably bump the RAM as much as you can.

the 40gb drive while adequate by ASG specifications, I would recommend something newer and larger around the 160gb.
Memory put 4gb. If the Sempron is capable of running 64 bit you will have all the memory available to you. Also the Sempron might be able to use the power reduction functions in the new kernel, where as the intel chip won't.

Most definitely upgrade the NICs to the Intel version as previously suggested.

Hey Andy,

This wouldn't be a bad system at all. Your system would run Astaro as-is right now {with a second NIC}. The main concern is although you are using it for "home use" is with it keeping up with a 100Mb/10Mb connection without the router being a bottleneck and causing you some frustration. A 100Mb/10Mb connection is not considered a casual "home use" connection. It's pretty beefy. 

So here's my take on the low down:
CPU- Sempron = Good choice

RAM- 1GB Geil = so so, it will run but I foresee problems. Your board max's out at 2GB. I found 2x1GB Kingston 

The 100/10 connection is the new speed from Virgin Media.  Should be staring the trials soon.  My current connection is 50/5, so still not slow.

Behind the gateway I have a server running windows 2008 and hyper-v.  It is only running 4 VM's which include Windows Home server and SBS 2003.  At the moment, astaro is running in hyper-v, and is connected to a GBit switch with wireless N for my laptop.

Not your typical home setup, but I run a local charities servers and nework and do a lot of testing at home.  I would use astaro as the charities gw, but it is just too expensive for them to buy a license.

As I already have the geil ram, I'll probably just bump it upto 2GB with an extra stick.

In respect to the HDD, I think this board is able to boot from a USB flash drive.  Would I be able to run astaro from on of these drives??

As an alternative, I could install a pci sata raid controller I have knocking about and then try and find a cheap sata drive.

How important is the disk i/o to astaro?  I was under the impression it mainly used the ram and very little of the hdd.

I might risk the realtec cards as they are only £7 each where the intel ones are £22 each.

Just another quick question.

I know astaro is going to be faster running on its own hardware, But how much performance is lost by running it under vmware server on say windows server 2003?

I only ask as it will allow me to backup/recover astaro much more easily.

This has proved useful in the past when a faulty update has been release causing the gateway to block all traffic.

I gather the realtec vs intel nics in this setup wouldn't really matter as astaro would be using virtual ones from vmware
