HA setup from scratch using 2 x ASG120

Hello folks,

I'm on my way to setup 2 asg120 (web / net subscriptions)  HA - Active/Passive, so I have a few questions. 

My plan is the follwing:
1. Connect all cables 
1.1 Both asgs to all switches, router, and the between the asgs using a cross cable for HA. 
Question >> Is it necessary to use a cross cable for the HA heartbeat signal?

2. Power up
2.2 Everything except the wan-router (for security reason) and the second asg box/node

3. Configure the first asg box/node completely.
Question: Is it just a good idea to configure the master completely or not?

4. At this point I would activate the HA feature.
Question: What are the difference or advantage between the automatic configuration and the hot standby-active/passive ?
Question: Is the HA automatic configuration setting default on or off?
4.4. So depending on my question about the default HA setting, I would just power up the second node and the second node will automatically gets synced and gets active under webadmin as second node...that's it?

Bonus question: If the HA system is up and running, is it true that the system will generate virtual mac adresses for the network interfaces?
Due to a special ISP thing, it is necessary for us to verify the wan mac adress with the ISP to get the network up and running, which is normally not a big thing, but in a HA situation and if a hardware failure occurs, it is worst case if the mac changed.

I would appreciate If someone could inspect my steps and to clarify my questions.

    Have you studied the Cluster and HA Deployment Guide?

    You do need a crossover cable for the HA connection.  Actually, the syncing also takes place over the HA connection.  If that fails, the backup connection handles only the heartbeat.

    It makes no difference how completely you configure the Master prior to attaching the slave.

    I'm not sure how it works, but I know that failovers are invisible to the ISP.  There is a limitation on the type of interface you can use for the WAN connection; you'll read about that in the Guide.

    Hi,

    Thank you for the quick reply.
    Yes, I have studied the 'Cluster and HA Deployment Guide', but based on your post I've studied again ;-) and I found something interesting 'For example, the fact that MAC addresses are shared between the HA nodes, completely masks a failover for client PCs.'
    This sounds pretty good for my mac based question.....

    Excuse the 'noob' question, which connection did you mean with backup connection, If you didn't mean the HA?

    Ok, this option is only possibly if I choose the manual active/passive conf...Not bad.

    'Last question': So, it is not necessary to touch/conf. the slave system If I plan to set up a hot standby system,  I just have to power on the slave?

    If you let the automatic configuration work, I think you'll see that Astaro chooses the Internal interface for backup.  If you have the Master configured correctly, all you have to do is connect the Slave (do a Factory Reset if you've already configured it some) and power it on.

    I'm not sure what's the actual version of our asg's, they're arrived a few days ago - still untouched. If the default is auto conf. disabled, I have to connect to the slave too for enabling this feature - right? Is it necessary to license the slave as well via webadmin? If not, why?

    I'm preparing for tomorrow, so I  try to clear as much as possible.

    That link also says that the 120s are OK if they have 7.505 or later.  7.505 was released on 20 May 2010, so I would expect that both devices would have that or newer.

    If you do need to Up2Date, bring both units up to 7.507 separately, then do a factory reset on the slave.  There is a 30-day trial license when you start a new Astaro, so that lets you do the Up2Dates without applying a license.

    Everything is up and running, but I have one strange thing which doesn't look like a cosmetic error >  HA live log:

    Both asgs are running in demo mode  - safety 1st's > thanks for the hint...current version of the nodes is 7.507.
    The HA state is: active on both nodes
    Reminder >> I'm trying to setup a Hot Standby environment! 

    Any ideas ?

    Same here,

    i rebooted my slave ASG today. HA Status is Active for both nodes, but i've the same messages in HA log.
    schema "_asg_cluster" does not exist 

    My version is 7.507
