ASG 220 as a software appliance

Hi,

I'm considering buying a used ASG 220 for use with my existing home license, which I currently use on an ASG 110.  Since this would be a home license, I'm assuming I'd have to wipe the hard drive using DBAN and install the ASG software appliance ISO onto the 220 (i.e. exactly what I did to get up and running on the 110), and that I could then restore a configuration backup of the 110 onto the 220 to get up and running.

Has anyone out there attempted this?  I'm partial to the Astaro hardware since  hardware compatibility shouldn't be an issue, and this particular unit I'm looking at is probably cheaper or as cheap as an equivalent PC system.  If anyone knows of a reason why this would not work then I'd be very grateful to hear about it now, before I pull the trigger on the 220.

Also, am I correct in assuming that it's still not possible to get a home license for a hardware appliance?

    If it's a old 220 (serial number starting in a 9), then it only has 512MB of RAM, and can not be upgraded (limited by chipset).  It's not worth messing with the older ones, they are just too slow with all the new features in the later builds of V7 and the new V8.

    All you have to do is remove all of the partitions off of the drive (i use gparted for this), then you can use a standard Astaro ISO on it, but not the appliance ISO.  The Ethernet ports will also be detected out of order, so you'll need to relabel them.

    Once you have deleted all those partitions, you can no longer use the appliance as an offical Astaro ASG appliance; the ISOs will not load.

    Thanks - I don't have the serial number but it's an ASG220 rev. 2, manufactured in September 2008, with 2GB RAM.  I'm not sure whether my best bet as an upgrade from my current ASG 110 unit is this 220, or a PC (with potential but probably fairly unlikely hardware compatibility issues).

    Depends on the price (and maybe the power & noise level, I'm not very familiar with the appliances).

    Turns out it was one of the newer units, but someone snapped it up (on eBay) for about double what I was willing to pay as a best offer.  Oh well.  CappuccinoPC.com may be what I go with instead.  Thanks for all the advice.
