Old ASG 220 - license and software updating

I've seen some threads here already with much the same questions, but just to clearify some things (I've sent the question to Astaro, but not received word so far)

I recently purchased an old ASG 220 (2006-model). I've connected it to my network (running HP ProCurve 24p) and accessed the webadmin easily. However, the basic license naturally has expired.
The software is V7.304 if I remember correctly. 

The options for renewing to a free home user license as I've understood is;
- Updating via Up2Date by settting time & date to an earlier point (how?)
- Requesting a temporary license from Astaro to renew software to later V7 revisions and eventually maybe V8 ?

Since it's free home user license I'm talking about, I thought it would be best to ask here as well, since I'm not paying Astaro anything at the moment...

    If I remember correctly, you can't directly use a home-user license on a Appliance.
    Astaro provides two installation isos, one for Appliances (SSI), and one for custom hardware (ASG).
    If you want to use a home user license, you have to reinstall using the ASG iso. You can install a ASG iso on a appliance after you manually nuked the partition table.
    (You will need to connect Keyboard + monitor for the install)

    OK, a little free advice...

    It sounds like you're in a business, and that you're testing the Astaro for that.  If that's the case, and you intend to use this for something other than a device at home, you shouldn't nuke the partition table to install a software iso.  You might be able to work with a local reseller to get a 30-day demo license for the subscriptions you're interested in.

    Then again, the reason people sold their old 220s was the limitation to 512MB of RAM.  Depending on your user count and the subscriptions you need, it's likely that you would have to make some choices between security and stability/speed of the ASG.  Again, you need to talk to a reseller if this is a potential business solution.

    Thanks for replying. No, no business. Just entusiastic about hardware. I will use it for my home network with the occational LAN with friends and general internett usage. So the lack of RAM will probably not be a big of a deal.

    I will look into the installation thing, sounds like I need to look around for a way to get connected to the ASG.

    I still suspect 512MB RAM may be somewhat limiting for v7.x and v8.x, even on a home network.  Not using the SMTP proxy, HTTP/S proxy, etc. will help out I'm sure, but personally I like to run those even at home to keep my network virus-, malware- and spam-free.  I run an ASG 110 (with the software appliance ISO installed) which works well on 8.0x now that I've upgraded it to 1GB RAM.  RAM usage typically runs around 75% of 1GB for me, and swap usage at 35% (of 1GB swap), so I'd expect your 220 would be making fairly heavy use of swap.

    Hi, in my experiences with v7, the system uses about 380MB RAM for PF + IPS, but trying to manually upload an up2date file is unpractical. Normal up2dates worked fine.
