Running v8 on ESXi: 32-bit or 64-bit

Hello,

I've been running ASG v8 on ESXi for quite some time now. I installed using the Astaro ESX image running on top of vSphere (ESXi 4.1).

Recently I found out that the Astaro ESX image is 32-bit, while Astaro v8 can now be installed with a 64-bit kernel. As my hardware and ESXi 4.1 support running 64-bit guest OSes, I am wondering if there would be *any* gain in not using the Astaro ESX image, but install from ISO in 64-bit mode.

As far as my knowledge goes, I would say no (as Astaro will not need a lot of memory in my environment), but I could be wrong ... any ideas?

Additional question:
- when using the Astaro ESX image you get an 'old' v4 virtual machine version in ESXi ... I have upgraded this to v7 ... was this a good idea (why or why not) for performance reasons?
- there is also no explicit information on how to install on ESX/ESXi 4 in the readme file with the Astaro ESX image (although it does says something on how to install on ESX/ESXi3.5)

    Good stuff Roland. Glad you got it fixed.

    Just a curious question if you could check a setting please.

    I know the E1000 driver is superior in all respects to the compatibility based "Flexible" driver. But did that change in turn activate the "Promiscuous" mode? Something is telling me that may have been the underlying problem.
