Running v8 on ESXi: 32-bit or 64-bit

Hello,

I've been running ASG v8 on ESXi for quite some time now. I installed using the Astaro ESX image running on top of vSphere (ESXi 4.1).

Recently I found out that the Astaro ESX image is 32-bit, while Astaro v8 can now be installed with a 64-bit kernel. As my hardware and ESXi 4.1 support running 64-bit guest OSes, I am wondering if there would be *any* gain in not using the Astaro ESX image, but install from ISO in 64-bit mode.

As far as my knowledge goes, I would say no (as Astaro will not need a lot of memory in my environment), but I could be wrong ... any ideas?

Additional question:
- when using the Astaro ESX image you get an 'old' v4 virtual machine version in ESXi ... I have upgraded this to v7 ... was this a good idea (why or why not) for performance reasons?
- there is also no explicit information on how to install on ESX/ESXi 4 in the readme file with the Astaro ESX image (although it does says something on how to install on ESX/ESXi3.5)

    My system is a Dell T110 which fully supports 64-bit virtualization technologies (X3440 CPU with VT-x and VT-d support).

    As memory use is concerned, my (virtual) ASG will probably never use more than 3GB ... so I would also think 32-bit is sufficient.

    What type of virtual NIC do you use? Did you upgrade your hardware version under ESXi 4 also to v7? Any other tips for configuring ASG under ESXi 4?

    At the moment, I don't know why... but I have problems with only one 8.001 VM with HW version 7 and vSphere 4.1 (I run several other 8.001 Astaro with HW version 7 without problems, but not with vSphere 4.1 --> only vSphere 4, Update 2).
    I only use SSL client VPN and Site-2-Site VPN. If the VM runs with HW version 7, the Astaro sends out some SYN packets, but I never see the ACK packets.
    With HW version 4 (on same phys. HW) the VPN functionality runs without any problems....

    I deployed the Astaro from the .ovf template.

    I found now a solution for this problem:
    - Power down the VM
    - Delete all NICs from the VM
    - Added new NICs --> select the E1000 driver, NOT flexible
    - Upgrade virtual HW to version 7
    - Power on the VM

    These steps solved the problem for me.
