Processor Full Speed [GV3 Only] / Disabled / C-State Only / Enabled.

Setting this to Enabled MIGHT help lower the power consumption and temperature, but for it to run the CPU in low-power states, the Astaro kernel must support it.

Other than that, the BIOS defaults all look optimal.
The AGP aperture is irrelevant when not using a GUI (Astaro is text-based); leave it at 128MB.

An 8GB SSD would be too small for Astaro.

No point in running 64-bit with less than 4GB RAM.

- I changed it to ENABLED.
- It seems to take longer to boot, normally the lines of Green would just move, stall some seconds at "Restore Backup" follow by Skipped.
- With this Enabled, I do noticed it stalled at "Restore Backup" much longer.

In terms of Usage, so far no obvious problem.

In terms of CPU % in Astaro, it seems to be Higher (Used to be around 5 - 10% under normal usage but now it seems 10 - 20% but I need to let it stable since just boot up is always busy.

In terms of whether it would be Cooler, I would let you all know tomorrow.

I am not a Hardware Guy as in I just buy ready computers, never really read on the CPUs etc.
Based on what i read it seems to mean the following in layman terms.

C-State means when it is Idle, it lower the voltage thus save power and is cooler but it seems a lot of report on Hangs when it tries Turbo from its idle stake.

GV3 = If you enable, it would go Higher when necessary. If you disabled, it would be stuck at 800mhz.

Alvin, in order to decrease the temperature, you should see if it's possible to slow down the speed of cpu in bios settings. Sure, you will have an higher cpu usage, but I think it's better to have an high cpu and low temperature than the opposite.

Hi All

Just to update you all on the progress.

1) - Processor Full Speed [GV3 Only] / Disabled / C-State Only / Enabled.
Disabled = C-State and GV3 Disabled.
GV3 Only = C-State are Disabled.
C-State Only = GV3 is Disabled.
Enabled = C-State and GV3 are Enabled.

1.1) I set it Processor Full Speed: Enabled.
1.2) The following options appeared
1.2.1) Enhanced C-States enable: [Enable] / Disable.
This enables / disables Enhanced C-State Support.
1.2.2) Time Stamp Counter Updates: [Enabled] / Disable.
Control TSC updates after C3/C4 through the setup option.
1.3) I left the system with the above configuration over night.
1.3.1) Overall Usage does not feel a difference.
1.3.2) I checked the CPU Graph and is the usual 5 - 10% .
1.3.3) I touched the surface of the box, it is still Hot as in you wont want to leave your hands on it for more than 5 seconds.

2) I set Processor Full Speed: DISABLED.
2.1) Boot up based on what I see on the Screen those Green Lines looks normal.
2.2) But Actual Time before I get my Internet Access is indeed Significantly longer.
Estimated: Normal Enabled Configuration, 1 minute from pressing power button, I should have Internet Access.
Under this Disabled Configuration, took about 3 minutes.
CPU was 100% initially.. after about 15 minutes it Hover around 30%

I would again let it run overnight and feedback to you all if the heat is significantly lower or not.

So this C-State = It will auto lower the power usage based on CPU Load.
And this GV3 is like a Turbo whereby it can go Higher When Necessary?

1) I set it to Disabled yesterday.
1.1) CPU Usage was obviously Much Higher during initial boot up, when I managed to get into Astaro GUI, it was at 100%, that lasted about 5 - 10 mins before it starts to drop.
1.2) Definitely Significantly Longer to boot up before I have Internet Access.
If Enabled settings, I should be Ready in 1-2 minutes, with Disabled, estimated 4-5 minutes.
1.3) As usual, launch everything that needs internet and further more put it under Security Space Advance Audit Overnight, general CPU Usage is around 10 -30%, Fluctuates a lot more compared to Enabled where by the range is 5-10% and remains within that area.
1.4) It is just as HOT.

I am now changing to C-State Only = GV3 is Disabled so see how it goes.

One Problem with Astaro is we do not see the Processor Speed in Ghz thus cannot see what speed it is running etc.

Conclusion on the different settings is, they are ALL HOT.

Seriously no obvious difference when I tested by touching the surface.

Therefore, am I right to say the BEST Performance setting is GV3 ONLY?

You should be able to see the current CPU speed by running this command on the console:
cat /proc/cpuinfo

Why do you conclude that 'GV3 Only' is better than 'Enabled'?

Based on what I understand.

GV3 if Disabled, the CPU would run constantly at the Lowest Speed of 800mhz.
GV3 if Enabled, the CPU can run from 800mhz - 1.6Ghz depending on the load.

C-State if enabled = The Power Consumption would vary depending on the load of the CPU.
C-State if disabled = The Power Consumption would be constantly at 100%.

The reason I asked if GV3 ONLY is the Best Option.

1) I read on Forums whereby a lot of people talk about when C-State is enabled, it hangs their computer frequently.

2) I noted during Astaro Bootup after all these numerous test, there is a line that says CPUfrequency Module not supported.  I assume it means cannot varies the GV3 CPU / C-State.

3) During the test, non of the other settings shows that it does get cooler.

4) Thus since it does not get cooler, I thought might as well get the Highest Performance which is GV3 must be enabled.  As for C-State since even if enabled does not see a difference, with the risk of hangs (Not yet happened to me),, I thought might as well just avoid it completely by Disable C-State and stick to GV3 Only.

Do advice me if I am wrong.

I've never had a problem with C-States on my laptops or servers running Windows or Linux, so I didn't know that hangs were likely, but OK.

Previously I started with GV3 Enabled ( Default)
Then tried all the various possible configuration to see if it is cooler but it seems to be hot.

Just to let you all know, now I switched back to GV3 Only and Also Enabled (GV3 and C-State Enabled), I can see that it is Even Hotter.

But overall GV3 is Necessary for that additonal CPU Boost else even navigating / monitoring the web admin is too slow.

With regards to C-State causing Hangs in other Atom Based Computers Forums, maybe it is just for windows as so far it has not happend to me. I think it is more than a month already and it is still solid.

I switched back to my HP Server now as next thing to test this Fit2PCi is that Astaro Command Center to see if it works.

Nice to have such tiny silent boxes.

Suddenly a lot more ideas is possible as compared to previously even buying a HP Server for home is such a pain not just convincing vendors yes deliver it to home but also the "bet" on whether the hardware is 100% compatible.
