ASG v8 on Fit-PC2i

Guys,

90% I will be getting this, just some final thoughts on what I can do with the box if Astaro does not work on it to better justify spending that SGD$899 knowing it would be something useful even with the Linux CD they provide.

One thing bothers me is I cannot seem to find exactly what is that Network Card Chip on the machine.

As for SSD, I will put that on hold since not even sure if the box itself will work or not and a quick check of prices on SSD...well...did shocked me.
Not too keen to spend too much money on this tiny box and also not even sure if SSD makes a difference on top of booting up as Theoretically, 2GB RAM is more than sufficient (I am using around 1.5GB ), everything is running from RAM with just the logs writing permantely to HDD, not very convinced SSD would improve a lot.

But that is later part, first get that box working.


As for VLANs, me not that Level yet.

I suggest you to buy the hard disk separately. In this way you can buy a smaller (and colder) device.

There are the Standard Models my reseller carry.

1) Thus if I insist on a Diskless Model, it is ONLY that 
FITPC2i-D1G-C1100
FITPC2i-D1G-C1600-W

The problem is it is 1GB RAM and it is not something I can add later.
The CPU is lower for FITPC2i-D1G-C1100 and it does not come with Wi-Fi if Astaro Fails and I want to use it as a normal computer.

The Biggest Reason, it is just SGD$50 Difference thus the 1GB RAM Model is totally out for me. My system now uses 38% of 3GB.

2) Since 2GB is a Must ( I simply do not want Swap, why should I accept Swap when I can get more RAM) thus I am limited to the following

FITPC2i-D2G-C1600-H-W-XL
FITPC2i-D2G-C1600-H-W-X7

I do not want to take the Windows 7 Professional as it is SGD$300 Difference from the Linux version due to the License.

Since it may be a Astaro Appliance, no reason to risk SGD$300 on that Windows 7 Professional License whereby they will peel the sticker and paste on this box which means I cannot put it onto any other computer.

Thus FITPC2i-D2G-C1600-H-W-XL is my Final Model.

3) All Resellers, no matter buy from main website, compulab, UK website or my local reseller, Any Non Standard Configuration, you Must place order of 100 Pieces and above, wait for 8 - 12 weeks.

To us removing a 160GB HDD is simple but it is a administrative nightmare for them thus just get that 160GB HDD with Linux.

4) If Astaro Works, YEAH !
    If it does not, I will attempt other Firewalls such as Untangle, Edian, Guardian etc.

Else it would be Ubuntu.

They replied to me, I should be able to get in 4 weeks if I can confirm by end of Friday...

why cant you add more ram to it yourself?  i have seen these things taken apart and it looks like regular laptop memory in it.

The D1G Model and D2G Model is just SGD$50 Difference and note the CPU is 1.1Ghz and 1.6GHz.

There is no reason for me to do such things risking voiding the warranty.

To the best of my knowledge, it seems they only designed a slot that can only access the Hardisk from the side.

I did not see any access for RAM unless you want to open up entire case etc which I do not plan to do that until the warranty is over.

Lastly, since they designed it to be Rugged etc, I would expect them to Solder it onto the board rather than have those slots etc which can be loose etc.

Now I need to figure out can one home user have multiple home licenses.

Also if I am limited to one license, if I import my current HP Server configuration other, will it be able to take it since it is a totally difference piece of hardware, different NIC chips and now is 2 NIC.

Also need to go and buy a USB DVD ROM ( Anything I should look out for ) to boot up and load Astaro.
