ASG v8 on Fit-PC2i

I am Proud to inform you that the Fit 2 PCi worked 100%.

1) Installed ISO 8.001 (It did not prompt me for 63bit kernel even though someone told me that Atom 1.6 support)
2) I loaded my HP Configuration and it simply down the DMZ as it had 2 interface now.
3) No Known issues so far.
4) There was a 2 weeks delay because my First Shipment, that Hardisk Cover was Protruding which is simply irritating to me thus I got it replaced.
5) The Box is HOT as in you wont want to keep your hands on it.

Just to share with you all what I experienced.

1) The exact model of Fit2PCi I got is
CPU  Intel Atom Z530 1.6GHz
(At the point of my order around 6-8 weeks ago, there was no 2Ghz, Now 2Ghz is available but one problem is, they either have the model that does not come with HDD which is more expensive to buy yourself, warranty also a issue to remember HDD is purchased yourself etc. The other model comes with Windows7 License. )

Chipset  Intel US15W SCH
Memory   2GB DDR2-533 on-board 
(This is soldered on, do NOT buy 1GB and think you can upgrade yourself)
( Astaro 8.001, Default Installation follow by the Basic Setup Wizard, uses about 20% of 2GB RAM but remember that is super basic feature with Single AV)
(On my "Maximum Security" Configuration, it uses 45% of 2GB RAM, so you definitely want to buy 2GB Models)

Storage  Internal bay for 2.5″ SATA HDD (Mine was a Hitachi 5400RPM 160GB)
(Yes I was keen to buy the 8GB SSD Model but it was a 1GB Model and since RAM is critical and not be upgraded, I choose the 2GB Model, in short, so far, there is no Ideal all possible configuration available, it is also limited to what my local reseller thinks is popular)

(I purchased a HDMI Cable, one problem I faced with my Samsung 19" Screen is, I can see display during BOOT UP (Bios, Loading..) Both for Ubuntu (Boot, loading..then disappear) and Astaro (After POST, I cannot see the usual list of modules loaded) BUT after the "Loading", my screen shows Mode not supported, not sure why. Think I got to buy a DVI Cable then.)

(I purchased a Buffalo USB Optical Drive, note, a MUST to connect to 2 USB Port for sufficient power, took me a lot of test to realize this as even with 1 USB Port, the Optical Drive does Light Up, shows it is reading the Disc, but on the BIOS it would take very long to appear follow by just a blinking cursor)

Serial  RS232 full UART (Dont think Astaro uses this? )

So Far, compared to my HP Server, it definitely is Far Much More Silent now in the "study room" after I shutdown my HP Server.

In terms of performance compared to HP Server, I do Not feel any difference. 

CPU usage....MAX 56% at  during the initial stage due to all the Up2Date, after which is just 2 - 5 % under normal usage even with a Security Space Full Scale Advance Audit on it.

I do NOT get the prompt for 64bit Kernel during installation.
I was told ATOM does support 64bit.

The BIOS does have some settings on CPU but I do not understand what it is about.

I will find time to write down all the settings, type it out and you guys teach me what is the BEST Performance?

That is all for now, so far, other than not having a DMZ Port, not having a HA Fail Over Port, I think this hardware should be better than a ASG110/120.

Suddenly with this tiny hardware, a LOT of ideas is possible

1) I can deploy at my friends and relatives home since their main problem was not keen to have a BIG NOISY HP Server constantly running.
2) I can play site to site VPN to "simulate RED" since we all know it is a PAIN to buy anything from Astaro as a consumer.
3) I can play with Astaro Command Center (Something I put off as not keen to buy more servers for home) but with this tiny hardware, idea is back to my to do list.

Oh Ya, another problem is Pressing the Power Switch on the Fit2PCi, would NOT shutdown the Astaro as in the nice manner.
I remember on my HP Server, it does shutdown properly if I press on the power button.

Hi All,

For that 64Bit, after doing some reading, I realize it seems the "300 Series" support 64bit and it does Not mean 500 Series which is suppose to be the Newer / Better would have all the features of 300 series.

NO, the Z500 series does NOT Support 64bit.

I hate the way they make it so complicated, on top of looking at the Ghz, now you need to see which series.

All items with Bracket [***] Below means that is the current setting and as and when there is a description on the bios, i type it below.

1) The HDMI Display issue whereby after the Phoenix / Bios Screen, I get the "Mode not Supported", it seems to be solved by Upgrading the Bios from Bios Date 22-Apr-2010  to Bios Date 14-Sep-2010 

I went ahead with the Bios Upgrade without testing the 128 / 256MB.

After the upgrade, when checking the Bios, I saw the Option of 128 /256MB, so I switch to 128MB thinking maybe 256MB was too high resolution thus my screen cannot support.

But I just switched back to 256MB and I am still seeing the Astaro Boot up Screen etc.

Thus I believe it is safe to assume indeed the Bios fixed the problem.

For those buying the box and have the April Bios, maybe you can see if you have the mode not supported and see if changing to 128MB will help.

So regret not testing the 128MB before I just went ahead to upgrade the Bios.


2) Another GOOD NEWS with the Bios Upgrade is, now you can Shutdown Astaro Gracefully by pressing the power button the the Fit2PCi.

Prior to this upgrade, pressing the power button "lightly" as in press and let go would NOT have any effect in Astaro, press and hold longer (just 1-2 second) and it is a HARD REBOOT which does not feel good as you can hear the Hardisk that goes TICK...Silent.
