Thanks Bob.  Yes, I did see that recommendation here and tried it, but no joy.  Weird that the disk I made from the 7.1 iso image boots, but the most recent iso image doesn't.

I downloaded the v7.504 ISO and burned it with Active@ ISO Burner to a CD-R.  When I put it in the gateway machine and reboot, I get a message about the linux it's trying to start, but it ends in a boot failure (hit key to retry, which just repeats the failure)*.  If I eject the CD, the gateway comes up and I can mount the CD and browse all the files.  This is running on an IBM 6792.

If I boot asg-7.100-071203-2, it boots fine, but of course I need to install the current version or I won't be able to restore my configuration.

Is there a way to install from a mounted CD?  Or some other way around this?

there's a "long" way.  install the 7.1 in it's 30 day trial mode.  then download hte updates and import them via webadmin..then tell it to install 7.505.  it'll automatically install every update previously(provided you've uploaded them into webadmin) and then reboot..you'll be at 7.505 then will be able to restore your config.

Thanks William.  My experience with up2date was that everything was automatic (I don't think I've ever uploaded anything to webadmin).  New updates just showed-up and I just clicked the update to the latest button.

But I guess you're saying this is the "long way" not because I need to manually find and download the updates, but that it will take a lot of time for up2date to download the updates?  In other words, I'd be sitting here at version 7.1 with a default configuration, not connected, and I'd need to configure enough to get connected to the Internet (get up2date working).  Then I'd wait for however long it takes until I get the update to the latest button to appear?  Or is there a way to manually download files?  Then I'd need to move them to the gateway box myself (burn to a CD on my PC, then mount the CD on the gateway box)?

you would have to download every update between your version that installs and the current one..then upload each one of them to the asl..then install form the latest one..the asl will then instlal each in succession.  It may take a few reboots.

So it installs, but then gets the error after rebooting?

Check the BIOS and make sure the IDE Controller is set to LBA. Alternatively, try Large.

Thanks Barry, but no, it doesn't install.

I've got a working 7.504 install, but want to add a NIC, so need to reinstall.

The bottom line is that when I boot from any of the many disks I have made from the 7.504 ISO image, I get "isolinux: Disk error 80, AX=4272, drive 9F".  

When I boot from the disk I made a long time ago (from a 7.1 ISO), it boots fine.  Other disks boot fine.

We had been exploring "the long way", and indeed, if I'd need to download each patch between 7.1 and 7.5, that would be long!

I'll try the IDE settings you mention.  I'm not sure how to specify the "nousb, no apic no acpi etc boot options", though.

I tried mounting my USB, but got stuck.  "lsusb" shows it, but there's no /dev/sda1.  I didn't want to sink too much effort into getting the USB working if this scheme wouldn't work: Can I boot from the 7.1 CD, break-out of that install, then run the 7.5 install from the USB stick?

Guys, Thanks for your support.  It's up an running with the 3rd adapter now.

What I did was download a different ISO file.  

Originally I downloaded "asg-7.504-100318-1.iso" and burned that many times with Nero and Active@, without success.  I figured I'd just download "latest_asg_v7_software.iso" and try that, and it worked!  I burned the CD with Active@ ISO Burner (disk at once raw).  That booted in the gateway box just fine.

As for restoring the abf config file, I did that in the web UI.  I had to give myself a fixed IP address, then was able to upload the backup config file I had saved "astarodrs_7.504_2010-05-29_01-15.abf" and that worked swimmingly.  The USB stick with that same file got read during the install, but I'm not sure I left it in during the right moments*, so I had to load the abf through the web interface, but no biggie.  Now I see, when I go to the hardware tab, the additional NIC adapter.  Not sure if it will really transmit and receive yet, but it looks like it is healthy.

* the first boot of the gateway after the install said 'no operating system', so, in a mild panic, I removed the USB stick, booted to BIOS, and specifically selected to boot from hard disk.
