That's a very low-level point to be failing, and points to problems finding and loading the boot sector.  Not sure if ThinkCentres have a hidden recovery partition, but if it does, you might try disabling it in the BIOS.  Of course that means you will lose the ability to restore the machine to the factory preload if you decide not to stick with Astaro.  Alternatively, you might try swapping out the hard drive for an old drive you have lying around; Astaro doesn't need a large or fast drive.

Also, press Alt-F1, Alt-F2 and Alt-F3 to get the different startup logs during the boot and installation.

well I looked in the bios and no mention of recovery options. I removed the HD and deleted the main and recovery partitions. Restarted the install and its been at least two hours with the "loading initrd" still seamingly stuck..  BAlfson I tried the Alt key options and nothing changes...

time to try on another machine perhaps....

does it hang while booting the installation CD or does it hang after having successfully installed the software?

BTW, you can also try the ASG V8 beta, where we have a massivly improved hardware detection and newer drivers. maybe that helps,

Also, try burning a new CD from ISO and use a much slower setting.  If the installation CD runs for over 10 minutes, there's a problem somewhere.
