Surge protections Ethernet protection.

I want to get a a surge protector with Ethernet protection to help protect my WAN interface on the Astaro.  

I am thinking that the surge protectors Ethernet protection is just a pass-through device that will not mess with the Astaro's function, but I am not sure. I do not want to buy a new protector if the Ethernet is not usable. That would just be a waste of money.

Has anyone used this successfully?

    How close was the strike?
    Do you have a lightning rod on top of your house? (hopefully away from the TV antenna and any wires)

    For close or direct strikes, you probably need to use several feet of fiber and put the devices several feet apart, to keep the lightning from jumping through the air.

    Even then, as you say, it's very hard to protect against.
    Maybe a Faraday cage around the house [:P]
