Surge protections Ethernet protection.

I want to get a a surge protector with Ethernet protection to help protect my WAN interface on the Astaro.  

I am thinking that the surge protectors Ethernet protection is just a pass-through device that will not mess with the Astaro's function, but I am not sure. I do not want to buy a new protector if the Ethernet is not usable. That would just be a waste of money.

Has anyone used this successfully?

    I've used lots of the APCs with Ethernet Jacks... if you open one up, you'll see that it's just wires with a MOV (Metal-Oxide Varistor)... everything works as regular ethernet until there's a surge, at which point the MOV shorts out to absorb the surge, and you may then have to replace the MOV or the surge protector.

    I wouldn't bet on gigE working well through those though.

    Late last summer my house took a direct lightning strike and fried every network connected device in my home. My plan is to use two media convertors and a short piece of fiber to connect my WAN.
     
    A surge protector would have been useless in this case, it burned the connectors off of the ends of the cat5 and the end of a 14 gauge ext cord.[:O]

    Yeah, hard to fight Mother Nature and win... nothing wrong with using surge protectors though, just don't go cheap, and buy ones that are rated for the speeds you will be using.
