Licensing "Astaro Network Security"

We've been testing the software gateway with a demo license. We're really happy with the SSL VPN, IPS & reporting functionality and plan to buy a Network Security license before the demo expires in 7 days. We don't need Web or Mail security for the moment.

Situation: we have 16 users and only 5 of them will ever need to connect via SSL VPN. As expected we also want to be protected by firewall, IPS, and DoS protection.

Question: will a 10 user pack be enough or do we need to buy the 25 user pack? With the "Essential Firewall" product available I'm a little confused which license to get considering we'll only have 5 SSL VPN users.

Hi, James, and welcome to Astaro!

The system counts IPs. So, if you have 16 users plus a server or two and five users who use VPN, you'll just barely fit into 25 users.

An ASG 120 has unlimited IPs, costs $595 one time, and Network Security for it is the same as for a 25-IP software license.

fi you have your own hardware you only need to download the iso and pay the license fee for network security and save the $595 on the hardware which is underpowered.

Well, yes and no, William. The real question is whether, with 21 users (= 16 + 5 VPNs), he can live inside a 25-IP license. He needs to work with a reseller to get that answer and to figure out if the 110/120 is enough horsepower for them.

I just checked two Executive Reports from yesterday of customers that have new 120s. One is about that size and is only using Network Security; the unit doesn't use swap, max CPU is 44% and average CPU is 22%. The other has all three subscriptions and a few more people, but less activity; no swapping, two 5-min peaks over 60% in the day and average 9%. I agree that one day doesn't prove anything, only that they need to get a dealer with some skin in the game.

Thanks for the input guys. Now I know that Astaro counts by total IPs. We're going be buy a 25-IP license; we'll be able to live inside that without issue.

On another note we're running our own hardware, 3.2 GHZ Intel Pentium D based system and have had great performance. I've looked at the Astaro 110/120 and it's hardware spec seems underpowered by comparison. In any case it's the software than does the heavy lifting.
