vm esxi4 home users - what hardware

Hi,
I know this is not specific Astaro question. I am trying to build a vm esxi4 server. What hardware did you use and how did you justify the cost?
I have borrowed 4 port NIC from work to see if I can get the hardware to work. The standard motherboard disk controller and raid controller are not acceptable.

    I'm running esx 4 for over almost a year. I know that the hardware specs for esx 4 are really "abnormal", like only 1 Gb/s NIC's are allowed, RAID controllers, RAM etc....

    You're lucky that you got a 4-port NIC (hopefully it's 1 GB/s card otherwise it's a no-go for the NIC's).
    About the disk(s)/storage. I understand that the onboard IDE or SATA controller is not supported or working. Well I know a hack that worked for ESXi 3.5, i think it will also work for v4. 
    If 1 disk can be used to install the OS on it or you've accomplished to boot ESXi 4 from USB-stick (I did this with ESXi 3.5 but never tried it with v4) you maybe can take advantage of iSCSI, but this only works if you have another PC/server. There are free (linux) iSCSI-targets, like OpenFiler and a limited version for windows (Starwind).

    I tried esxi first, but that doesn't usually seem to work with end user hardware - you'd probably need a real raid controller and so on.

    So I switched to xenserver, which does support more hardware.

    Justifying the cost ... I need a home server anyway, might as well run more than one machine on it.

    Hi folks,
    thank you for that info, it was a lot more than I could find searching the web.

    Looks like I am trying to use the wrong motherboard.

    I will have to  look at what other motherboards I have installed and re-arrange some systems.
