Astaro Home Edition Initial Setup

I just posted the same request earlier, but I soon after realized I did not post it in the preferred sub-forum. [:S] So, I will copy/paste below. This is regarding the astaro home edition free software download that is to be installed on an extra computer for the purpose of being a dedicated firewall. Original post below. 

Hello everyone,

Firstly a bit of background on me. I am a self taught computer technician with a skill level on the lower end of intermediate. I primarily, for the past 15 years, have been a user of windows. But about a year ago, I started trying out various distributions of Linux. i.e. opensuse 11.1, Mepis, Ubuntu and recently I set up my primary system as a dual boot running Windows XP Pro and Kubuntu. 

I like to experiment and try different configurations to expand my computer knowledge which brings me to this posting. I am in the planning process of setting up astaro on an extra machine I have and place it as a firewall to enhance my security and also to simply hopefully have some fun and expand my knowledge. The older unit for the astaro is a Pentium D 3.0 Ghz with a gigabyte of Ram.

My computer environment is very basic as this is for my home which consist or up to four computers online at the same time. I am on cable broadband with a D-Link DGL-4100 router and of course a cable modem.

I believe the only stupid question is the one that is not asked, but some will still think this is stupid. I do place the astaro unit between the router and modem - correct? The reason I ask is, I read the astaro unit can function as a router. And I thought if it would have to be placed before the router, I am in trouble, as I could only place three ethernet cards maximum in the unit.

I am aware that my router in itself performs SPI and other security measures and it may be possible the astaro unit is not needed, but as long as it does not create conflicts I would like to proceed for the experience of it.

If anyone would like to confirm the placement of the unit and any other suggestions/recommendations it would be appreciated. Any sincere suggestions are appreciated.

Another thought - I have also considered smoothwall and ipcop. Is astaro the best choice, or is another better suited?

    I would say that you don't need the D-Link router anymore.
    At home i have my cable modem, then the Astaro, followed by my internal switch. Thats all.

    And yes, Astaro is always the best choice (of course...)

    Correct, Yes.

    The way I have mine setup at home is:

    Modem  Astaro  Linksys(WRT54GL)  PCs

    I still have my Linksys (w/ DD-WRT firmware) there because it manages my wireless but also acts as a switch till I can get a proper one.

    I am confused as to why you say I don't need the D-Link router. The computer I am using to load astaro on will only hold three ethernet cards versus my router will handle four connections directly. And I have up to four computers online at the same time. I could understand not needing the router if I used a switch to handle four computers, but my D-Link router can play that role.

    On another note, last night, when I loaded astaro on the dedicated computer, the install asked me if I wanted to install the tool-kit and I chose yes. It soon prompted me to go to https://192.168.2.100.4444 to complete the configuration. There I was prompted to login with a password which I did not have. I saw nothing before hand that mentioned I would need a password to complete configuration.

    So, that brings me to another question. Is the tool-kit not a free item? And, if I do not download the tool-kit, then is the set-up going to be lacking some features?

    In your situation I believe you want to use the router in bridge mode. In this configuration the router will expand your network but will not provide any firewall or routing functions. That will be handled by the Astaro box. It will simply allow you to connect you workstations behind the firewall. Consult your router documentation in order to configure it in bridge mode. 

    I am not sure about the tool kit question but I am interested in the answer. 

    And yes, as my 8th grade science teacher drilled into us - the only bad question is the one that you do not ask.
