Recommend for low-power box?

Hi Jim,

I have been very impressed with this little server. It runs very well. I put a 75 Gb Raptor drive in it along with 2 Gb memory.

Astaro loaded straight up, no problems at all. I did not load any additional software!

Memory use is constant at 31%. Been running now about 14 days.

I use most features of Astaro with the exception of mail encryption and it sings right along.

I was most concerned with power use and it has leveled off at about 28 watts give or take. I am very pleased.

There is a small fan on the processor and a fan for the power supply so it does make some noise, but very little. 

Yes, the box runs 24 x 7.

I might get a bit more energy savings if I went to a green drive... But not going to spend the $60 or so dollars to make that happen right now.

Let me know if you have any further questions, but yes, I would recommend this box - runs just great!

Thank-you both for your feed back. I placed and order for the server with 2 gb of dual channel ram through Amazon. Expected delivery time is next Friday. I am giong to use an Mtron mobi 3500 64 gb ssd inch which is currently running in the P3. With the combined low power of the server and drive I should use considerably less energy. Thanks again for your help!

One other question. I did not see a CD rom on the server. So the question comes how was the astaro install done? Bootable memory stick, USB Cd rom?

Either via USB CDROM or with the Astaro "Smart Installer" - a USB stick with built-in R/W-CDROM emulation (in other words, it doesn't look like a hard drive like all other USB memory sticks).

I now use a USB CD, but previously I just plugged a drive into the motherboard for install.

That is what I will most ikely do. I have a spare rom that I can connect to the IDE controller. Although the drive is moving from the current Astaro box to another given the hardware differences I dont think it will work minus a reload. Most servers I have worked with (Compaq DL 380 and up) came with a CD rom installed. What brought this to light is I downloaded the manual today and began reading it. Either way a new box is on the way which I think will be very cool!

I also use a spare CD / DVD drive for my installs. Works very well.

The only thing you will need to change if you end up with this littie server is make sure the drive is plugged in, boot to BIOS and set the drive to first on the boot priority screen.

Then have fun! Install should go smooth as glass....

Hi Ray,

That is the path I will take. I purchased the same server you have on Saturday (atom 330 with 2gb dual channel ram). I dont use any of the SMTP features or anti-virus scanning at the firewall. However the DNS, HTTP proxies, and IPS are heavily used. I am also installing a Mtron 60gb 3.5 inch SSD for my hard disk. Outside of the decreased power usage no hard drive noise! Thanks again for your help!

Hi All,

Looking for recommendations on low power box to run my Astaro Gateway.

Currently running on an older PC that really sucks the power and I am wondering if anyone would be willing to toss their system specs out?

I would like to get down in the 50 or so watt range as I am now around 135 watts.

I tried installing 7.5 on a dual core Atom and had no success. Used all the various Astaro install switches and installation halted every time with mp-bios bug error.
