Recommend for low-power box?

Hi All,

Looking for recommendations on low power box to run my Astaro Gateway.

Currently running on an older PC that really sucks the power and I am wondering if anyone would be willing to toss their system specs out?

I would like to get down in the 50 or so watt range as I am now around 135 watts.

    I am thinking about getting one of the "SUPERMICRO SYS-5015A-H 1U" servers and have some questions. Did you load the "Super Doctor" tools for Linux on the device? Or did you just load Astaro from the CD without extra software? What average memory and CPU usage are you seeing in the Astaro dashboard? My network has 10 devices currently on it, with 25/15 Fios internet service. Going from a P3 dual processor with 2gb of ram, should I expect a performance gain? If I buy the dual core box I will be installing a Mtron Mobi 3500 64 GB SSD drive. Based on your posts it looks like you have had the server running for about 10 days. Are you still pleased with the purchase? Does it run warm? I am assuming it runs 24/7. Thanks in advance for your help!

    Hi, I'll answer a few of your questions...

    You shouldn't install third-party software without really knowing what you're doing; it's unlikely to work anyways as Astaro is VERY stripped-down.

    An Atom core is several times faster (in MIPS) than a PIII-500, plus the Atom has hyper-threading, and the Atom 330 is dual-core.
    Webadmin will be much faster, and overall performance will be higher (the IPS is usually the most CPU-hungry part of Astaro, with accounting probably next).

    My Atom 270 (single-core) runs at about 380MB RAM used, but I'm not using the SMTP, HTTP, or AV features. CPU load is 2-5% with some P2P traffic going, and if I max out my connection (10/2mbps) with P2P traffic, CPU usage will peak around 20% (from the IPS).
    A dual-core Atom would see about 1/2 the CPU usage.

    I'm very happy with mine, especially as it only uses 17watts. 
    Note that a 945GC Atom system will probably use 40-45watts.

    Mine does get warm, but it is completely fanless, and I'm not using an SSD.
