Anyone try/use PCIe Solid State Drives?

I just built my Astaro box with: MSI Industrial IM-945GSE-A Atom Mini-ITX Mainboard
I got it from Logic Supply: Logic Supply - Leaders in Mini-ITX & Small Form Factor Solutions

I was thinking of replacing the normal SATA drive with a solid state drive for the ultimate in reliability and low power, no moving parts, etc.

I think that motherboard will take one of these:
Newegg.com - Computer Hardware,Hard Drives,Solid State Disks,Mini PCIe (PATA)

Yes?  No?  Anyone try these?  Any issue with the Astaro software?  These probably aren't too popular cause most home builders have old laptop drives hanging around and those are cheap/free, but with these prices coming down in the sizes the astaro box needs, this might be a decent option.

    Hi, since it's not clear what driver would be needed to support that, you'd probably be much better off using a SATA SSD. Kingston is now selling SSDs with Intel controllers; Anandtech reports that a 40GB MLC is on sale at NewEgg for about $80 after rebate.

    Yah, you are probably right.  But you have to admit the motherboard with the drive snapped right into it is pretty cool.  Of course with just a laptop shaped SATA SSD, you get the same reliability and all the compatibility.  I don't know if I want to spend the $'s to test if it works.  If anyone else has, I would be interested to know your results.

    Many of the SSD devices noted there are MLC. I think you will find that they will be very fast in the beginning then slow down with usage. If you are interested in SSD devices, I recomend that you look as SLC memory type. Also you might want to look in to the standard IDE/PATA, SATA, or SCSI  designed to be a direct hard drive replacement. Here are some URL's:

    Greets I do have experience with the Board in question, after trying several Half height Mini PCIe SSD drives on the board none were recognized as a mass storage device.  This was a good 3-6 months ago though so it may have changed via a bios update but from when I tested it and got support from MSI there was no support for installing to or using the mini PCIe SSD as a storage medium.

    I have the ASG running with a SSD from MTRON 3,5" 64GB, SATA Interface, no problems, all is running fine.

    Hi Egbert, 

    I just ordered the same drive a few minutes ago. To hear you have had no issues with the Mtron is good. My drive selection was based on both decreased power usage, and elimination of drive noise. I also ordered a SATA to SCSI adapter from Addonics which enables using this drive on
    SCSI interface increasing drive throughput. My box is an HP PIII dual processor with 2 gb of ram using two Intel Pro 100 Plus Nic's. Hopefully everything works together with no issue.
