New Atom board and processor coming

Hi, my MSI board works great, but is somewhat expensive ($175USD). The whole system runs at 17 watts.

Yes, you can add a PCI card, as long as you get a case with a PCI slot (and PCI riser if the case is low-profile). Or you can use VLANs like I am.

AnandTech has a review of PineTrail, including a new motherboard from Intel (single NIC+1 PCI). The dual-core D520 runs around 25 watts, which is probably a big improvement over the previous low-end boards.

afaik, the low-power VIA systems are slower than the Atoms. AMD is supposed to come out with an Atom competitor, but it's behind schedule.

I have just ordered a smart switch with vlan tagging so I may just try that suggestion, I have never used vlans but I understand the basic concept.
Funny the switch will likely use more power than the astaro system.
 
I think I will use the msi board, I am using an amd 5050e now that draws about 55 watts average. This is running astaro as a VM on my windows home server system(sbs 2k3), Which seemed like a good idea at the time but I really want to separate the two systems. Then I can use lights out and sleep the WHS system as there is no need for it to run 24/7, it just does backups and serves some video/mp3's in the evenings.
 
I had considered running VMware on the new box so I could make use of a wireless card for an access point all in one box. This would likely be more efficient than an external access point but I am not sure it's worth the headaches or if the little atom could handle the added load. Maybe I will give it a shot with a stripped down linux host OS, but that is a lot of hassle just to save a few watts for wireless. Any thoughts on this?

I used to use Astaro as my WiFi AP, back when Astaro supported WiFi (5.x)...
It worked alright, but the antenna on the wifi card wasn't very good, especially being behind a mid-tower steel case. I put a larger antenna on, but it ended up breaking and damaging the wifi NIC.

My Linksys WRT54g (just using as an AP) and my NetGear switch only draw about 10 watts total (according to my Kill-a-Watt), so it works out fine for me.

Setting up VM's does seem like a lot of work to save 5 watts.
