The Smart Installer is an CDROM emulator. You install with it just like you would using a CDROM drive. The advantage is that the Smart Installer is small and the Astaro loads much faster. You can't really do an upgrade with it, just a complete reload from scratch.
On a different USB stick, put an unencrypted backup. After the Astaro finishes installing from the Smart Installer, it will beep five times. Remove the Smart Installer. Insert the USB stick with your backup and reboot. When the ASG reboots, it will restore your configuration.
