Seeking a quiet/low watt appliance?

I've recently been looking for a low watt solution for my Astaro setup, and I was eyeing Soekris equipment until I saw a post that shot down that idea.

I don't mind a challenge and, despite the frustration, I love the sense of accomplishment that comes in those "I did that" moments...

So the details then:

Current setup:

 ASG 7.4
An old PIII tower, 512MB RAM, 10Gb hd, 300W noisy power

   (1) 10/100 ethernet
  (2) gigabit ethernet

(2) rack switches
(1) Wireless router - for guest laptops, iPod touches, etc.
(1) WAP - my laptops

 Goals:

Appliance

   Low cost - I am a home user, and still limited by the 10 IP license . o O ( !@#$%^& )
  ASG 7.5 - anxiously awaiting soft release today
  Low watt
  Fanless
  Rack mount preferred
  D-sub 15/ps2 ports would be nice for setup/maintenance
  5 ethernet

     min of 4 gigabit for LAN
    1 WAN facing


I am not very familiar with embedded solutions, but they look to be the most promising.
 I'm at the starting point and any guidance or help would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi, the machine in my signature below is low-wattage (17w avg) and fanless, but not rackmount. It is very compact. The board and case with powersupply are about $250 online.

    You can get rackmount mini-itx cases, but I doubt they'd be fanless as you can't get any convection horizontally. Perhaps drilling lots of holes in the top of one would work.

    My system only has 2 NICs (both Intel gigE), and I use a $100 Netgear 'smart' switch to run several VLANs off of the firewall.
    Also, it is USB only; no PS/2 for mouse or kb. It does have several DB9 serial ports however.
    Note most mini-itx cases only accept 2.5" 'laptop' hard drives.

    I've seen some 'appliance' type systems which can run Astaro, but they all seem to be more expensive, and usually not gigE.

    I've seen a number of Atom motherboards now coming with the Realtek 8111 series gigabit nic.  

    Is the Realtek 8111 series now supported in v7.4xx or in the upcoming v7.5 release?  If not, are there any plans to add support?

    As the up2date service didn't download it automaticlt , i downloaded the pacakage manually and uploaded it to the Astaro &.504.
    Install didn't succeed and the following info in the log file.

    How does that MiniITX system handle 7.500?  Are you able to use most/all of the features available without any impact to performance?

    Hi, yes, I've already upgraded to 7.500 and it's working fine. I don't use the http, smtp, and AV features, but there's other users here running Atom boards who are.

    BTW, only the Intel 945GSE is very low-power... the other Atom boards use 40-45 watts because of the chipset. Also some have dual-core Atom CPUs, whereas I've only seen the GSE boards with the single core Atom 270.

    I've got a 10mbps fiber internet connection...
    The only bottleneck I've hit is copying files between 100mbit LANs; the IPS uses a lot of CPU... of course I can always create an IPS exception.
