Astaro Security Gateway Free Home Edition

That doen't sound like a "usual" problem.  It's difficult to say what might have gone wrong.  The standard installation doesn't include doing things as root at the console. 

Have you checked the http://www.astaro.com/lists/HCL-ASG-V7.txt to be certain that your harware is supported?  Once you've done that, it might be easiest to re-install follwoing the instructions item-by-item.  If you see something wrong in that processs, then ask about that here.

That's me why should I have a usual problem.   One thing hat I have learn't is that a usb keyboard is useless until the system is loaded - had to get an old ps2 keyboard so that I could change installation type.   
Have tried all three types of installations and still not able to get WinAdmin.
What I am trying to use is a machine with the following:-
Main Board:- ECS Model P4UMM2
Chip Set:-  Via VT8751 Prosavage DDR P4M266 System Controller with a width of 64Bit.
Processor:- Intel Pentium IV 1.5GHz
Memory:- 1.5Gb
Network Cards:- eth1 RealTek RT8139
                      eth0 Via VT6102 (RhineII)Embeded Ethernet Control
Disk:- 20Gb
Router:- Netgear WGT624 with an address of 192.168.1.1

Found an error in that I had accepted the defaults during setup of 192.168.2.100 which I later realized would not give me access from another machine.   During a re installation made eth1 the main card and changed the address to 192.168.1.100 with the subnet the same.   Installation proceeded as per normal droping back to the details page on completion.   Connected the router and did a hard connection to the controlling machine.

Was able to see the two machines talking to the router but no way would they talk to each other through the router.
Was not able to get to https://192.168.1.100:4444   Was not able to ping 192.168.1.1 from the Astaro machine and was not able to ping 192.168.1.100 from the controlling machine.

What am I doing wrong?.   Please help or am I going to go the a hardware version of the Astaro system?

or 2.
Internet -- astaro -- your router -- your network

I am assuming its 2. from your posts. Is there any way you can take netgear out of the equation till you get everything setup?

Thanks for your interest.

Before Astaro it was internet (netgear DG632 V2 moden/router ) to WiFi Router (Netgear WGT624) to network both hard wired and Wifi. 

Now it is 2 - Internet (through the DG632) to Astaro to WiFi/Hard wired Router (WGT624) then network.

Post setup I ran cables between Astaro and the Router and the Admin Machine and kept the WiFi out of the equasion.   
To date I have not put Astaro to the internet.

In respect to removing the netgear router I do not have another one except and Linksys Modem Router.

I possible would like to keep the gear that I have in lieu of purchasing new hardware.

You won't be able to ping anything from astaro till you setup some rules first. You can't ping astaro at all? This is strange... Only other thing you might want to try is reinstall and choose eth1 as your LAN just in case there is some problem with eth0 and see if it works. Is your wifi connected to astaro via internet port?

have done mulitiple setup using both eth1 and eth0 at various times with no change in overall result.
