Install fine but cant get to WebAdmin

I've recently downloaded ASG 7 home edition, and havre a problem with the setup. When installing, if I just hit enter at the very first screen the network cards aren't detected during the detection phase and the install halts with the message 'install on a hardware compatable PC' (or something similar to that).
If I use the option at the first screen to do a non apic install by typing 'classic' then the 2 nic's are correctly identified and the install succeeds. Or does it...
The pc reboots and starts fine, I get the 5 beeps... but I cant ping eth0, and or access WebAdmin. I've tried going through a different switch and connecting directly via crossover cable. No joy. My server is Win Server 2008 Std SP2, but I've also tried connecting from Win 7 Ultimate RTM and Win XP SP3. 
LAN ip 192.168.0.0 - server is 192.168.0.100  - eth0 I set to 192.168.0.1 
I tried using the default (192.168.2.100), no go either. 
So I'm wondering if the install hasn't really worked with the nic's (I have tried making either card the management one also - again, no joy) or am I having a brain shut-down?
I have no experience with Astaro, and no real Linux experience either.
The Astaro pc is a AMD xp2200+ processor, 1 Gb DDR ram, 40GB IDE 7200 HD.
Any help would be much appreciated - thanks in advance.

    Hi, which is the ip of the astaro? you can see it in the screen of the console login, try to put the address you read in the browser at the port 4444, for example if is 192.168.1.10 try https://192.168.1.10:4444

    Remember you must be in the same network

    If not work login via console with username loginuser and the same password, than type 
    su root
    use the same password and write
    ifconfig eth0 192.168.1.x

    now try to connect via WebAdmin using the ip you chose, remember the port is 4444, the protocol is Https, and the pc you are using to configure MUST be in the same logical network

    once you enter go to network and configure the network card

    Hi - thanks for that. 
    OK... It's highlighted the issue. When I tried to us loginuser the reply was 'login incorrect', so I logged in as root and changed password when prompted... 
    When I ran the ifconfig command it comes back 'no such device'  ... so there is an issue with the nic's? I tried eth0, eth1, eth3... infact eth-anything still gets no such device. I really appreciate your help with this... where should I go from here?  Some info to help understand my system:
    Client PC addr 192.168.0.100 (Win svr 2008) Astaro pc 192.168.0.1 (or would be if the eth0 existed) Other pc 192.168.0.11 (Win 7), Laptop 192.168.0.12 (win XP pro). All PC's connect in to a TP_Link 10/100/1000 8 port switch.

    OK... just rebooted and hit escape to get into the boot menu, then selected Astaro (Rescue) and after booted, still no go. But if I then log in (as root) and run ifconfig eth0 192.168.0.1 then  it works! and I can access WebAdmin from the other pc. Is this the process I use each time or do I still need to identify the problem so that I can do a normal start?  Cheers....
